As Ritzenhein specialized over 5000m and Webb specialized in the mile, I was curious as to who was faster in the 3000m. By PR, Ritzenhein is faster than Webb by a mere 0.25 seconds (7:39.03 to 7:39.28).
But, they never raced each other.
Webb only has 1 3000m listed by the IAAF (it was an en route in his 8:11.48 2 mile) and Ritzenhein ran his 3000m PR while in 13:16 shape (6 days after his 3000m PR, he lowered his 5000m PR to 13:16.06). Surely this means they could have gone a little faster, as Webb's was an en route and Ritzenhein lowered his 5000m PR by 20 seconds 2 years after he achieved his 3000m PR.
Webb's now retired from track and field and Ritz is now a marathoner, so we can't fairly debate who would win at this moment, but what about during their primes? Who would win over 3000m during the peaks of their careers (i.e. Webb during his 3:46 shape and Ritz during his 12:56 shape)? How fast do you think it would have been?
