What an awesome start to Day 2. Great action! Hot damn
As another poster said, the field definitely appeared to actively box out Ches in the middle of that race (Saarel especially was not very subtle).
That said, I think Ches did himself in here... kind of like Kiprop in Rio, he made way too many moves and his kick paid the price. You get 2, maybe 3 hard moves in a mile before burning out; it appeared that he made 4+.
He did come in 10th at 1500 last year. Only freshman to have made the final
He's 19, 20 in 5 months. Savage.

Yeah, a fascinating race to watch. At one point I thought all those obvious moves to counter Ches had backfired, I was thinking don't wake the sleeping giant, but tho they pissed him off, Ches couldn't counter in the end. Shiver me timbers! Those 2 races will be a tough act to follow.

It almost felt like the whole field was teaming up against Ches in the middle of the race, he was driven out to lane 5 at some points there and nobody was giving him any ground. Guess it worked at the end, wow.
P.S. Couldn't help but laugh at the little Ches 'visual tactics' short they put together with the boxes and arrows.
Those were the worst tactics I've seen from Cheserek in any NCAA championship race. He made way too many surges from 600 meters in to 1200 meters and simply burned his kick out. Also got to give a ton of props to Kerr for that race. I guess that odd Collegiate Mile Record holder streak of losing in the NCAA Final continues.
Gotta be the haggis
stream?
6.45 for Coleman which ties the 60m college record.

It's on watchespn:
http://www.espn.com/watchespn/player/_/id/3007553/size/condensed/But yea, would love to replay that mile later. Goes to show there's now 3 ways to beat Ches on the track:
1. Have a 13:02 5K PB and run it out of him (Lawi)
2. Slow it down to make it a 200m sprint (Williamsz)
3. Force him to make several costly and abrupt moves to the outside of a banked track to suck the kick out (!)
Props to the whole field on that race, though I was surprised Josh Thompson wasn't in it at the very end.
Any thoughts on what ramifications the loss will have for the 3K with Ches?
ches was broken around 150m to go, and then he packed it in most likely to save energy for the 3k.

Biggest one might be that it'll give guys like Knight hope that they can pull off the same. That being said, Ches is probably ultimately more suited for the 3K, and you can afford to make more moves in that type of race. Plus, now Ches will know to not give anyone any ground if they make a hard break in the middle of the race, even if they aren't a pre-race favorite. Still very hard to see a path for the field to victory there.
Geez another star runner from Scotland?
Trey Culver & Kyle Landon still alive for attempts at 7-6ft/2.29m

But by that time he had expended some energy obviously & he still had to protect his place for points, should make the 3K a more compelling race
44.85!!!!!
It's gotta be said, but Maton is the reason Ches needed to drop back and go out into lane 4. Once Thompson and Gourley went to the front, Maton boxed him in.
He's from the same group in Edinburgh as Chris O'hare came from
