Yeah! Now Aussies can have their own Laura Muir! But Australian female athletes aren't usually wimps. Sally Pearson comes to mind.
Crazy she actually look like she's 15. I was expecting something else.
On the Semenya spectrum?
Seriously offensive. She doesn't look masculine at all. I've watched her run since she was 10 - when surprisingly enough she looked like a little girl.
Suck it up boys, she's better than you. No need to get nasty.
In the same meet 12th grader runs 5k in 14:16
Watch the full race and the interview, then apologise.

Mate that is fast for a 15 year old girl. Mind you I saw a 16/17 year old girl run 1:17 for the half once and never improved, apparently triathlon persuaded her to switch and she just went backwards.

OK so a bit of background. Keely Small has been a cross country phenom since she was younger - like 9-10. Top 2 at nationals - there was a Sydney girl she always tussled with. She is from Canberra, and the story goes that she was talent spotted when younger and has been training at the Australian Institute of Sport since about 10.
I can't say what sort of mileage she's been on since young, but the 800 times are a surprise. I'd have expected her to be more of a 1500-3km runner.
Even if she has been training more like an adult, I can't see why her times won't continue to drop. I'm sure she can improve her 400 time, for example. In fact, to drop her 800 time, that's what she would need to focus on. Her 400 to 800 conversion is very good.
In that 2.01 race on the weekend, Keely knocked off the National senior champion. She also knocked 0.3 off the National U18 record. It was held be Georgie Clarke, who still holds the Australian U16 record - 2.02.49 as a 14yo. Georgie never got any better though - suffered years of injuries after her phenomenal times at 14-16. She ran a 4.06 1500 when aged 15.
Interesting, there are the odd white/European girls that run phenomenally as teenagers but then they bulk-up @ circa 18-19. I hope not in this case.
Can someone name me a USA teen phenom female distance runner who went on to become an international star? Seems like if you are really good as a teen you are doooooomed.
I know it's different with sprinters, but Suzy favor is the only one I can think of...that's probably because I knew about her because I lived in Wisconsin. She wasn't running close to he times these recent ladies are though. There's so many stars who go on to fizzle.

Mary Decker, Kim Gallagher, Lynn Jennings.
Keely has posted excellent 400m times this season so we knew she would go well in the 800m - but not this fast.
Same age group is Melany Smart (WA) just ran 9:17 3km. Both are running 1500m at nationals.

Yes I know that's fast for her age, that's why I was surprised she didn't LOOK like a 20 year old.

Good grief what a stupid supposition.
The fact is there are few that become "international stars" from any background. Being a teen phenom gives you an immensely greater chance than some rando who was not a teen phenom. That is a fact.
However that does not mean all teen phenoms become stars.

54.9.
I wouldn't call that excellent (not compared to the 800 time), but it's very good. But it doesn't leave a lot of room for a drop in the 800. The 80 time is 2.21 times the 400 time. That conversion is at elite man level (better than Rudisha though he's more of a speed 800 runner).
If she's going to focus longer term on the 800, she needs the right sprint and strength work to get her 400 time down further. If she's focusing more on 1500 longer term, then the 400 speed is enough.
I know, how 'bout we put a bunch of pressure on her, drool all over her and then when she runs a 2:05 say she's washed up and her coach overtrained her.
