One of the slowest I've seen is a 15:41, same kid got like 9:10 in the two mile though
Brian Sell only ran 10:06 in HS and eventually made the 2008 Olympic marathon team.

According to this article, Shorter won the New England state XC champs as a HS sophomore so he was clearly no slouch as a prep. Maybe he just didn't run the 2-mile often.
I remember hearing somewhere that Frank Shorter never even broke 10 minutes in the 2 mile in high school. He went on to win Gold.
