Daniel Kimetto? this announcer is an idiot
Will they blow up? 5k in 14:14.
Wouldn't it be something if they went SUB 2 the first time racing in those new Sub 2 Adidas shoes? Talk about Adidas stocks going up.
They just missed breaking Dibabba's world record!
14:14 at 5k. That's 2:00:06 pace for those scoring at home. This is a bad sign. Generally fast times do not come after running ridiculous first 5ks.
Saina right there with leaders, Hall 17 seconds back @ 5K
Lead pack of 6 at 5k in 16:39 in women’s race, including Saina. That's 2:20:30 pace. Quick, but sensible.
Yeah that 14:15 is fast.
Every World Record in running (with the exception of 2 records) was set via negative split. That being said they will be toggling between 14:15 and 14:40 for the next few 5ks so they have time to drop back. They likely will be right at 61:30 by the half giving Kipsang the chance to still bank the WR. I wouldn't overlook Kebede though, he's a beast.
6.5km they were back to 201:24 pace some was told tap the fvking brakes

If the runners did a proper warm up then anything is possible.
Guys - the first 5km drops about 130 feet. They are now on flat and running around 2'55/km. Where's that LetsRun calculator for downhill splits?
Also, it looks to me like the start and finish are quite far apart in terms of distance and elevation. Is this course really record eligible? It doesn't look like it to me.

Wonder if the course is 1 km short
The lead pack is splitting up before 10k
201:40 pace at 10k
That Pacer is having serious issues grabbing cup of fluid.
anyone see the logistics at 10k aid station? the runners practically came to a stop
14:36 for the second 5k in Tokyo. That's still 2:03:12 pace.
Overall, leaders are at 28:50 at 10k, or 2:01:39 pace.
Fastest first 10k ever in a marathon is 28:30 by Sammy Wanjiru in London in 2009.
Kebede is done

From, not me...
The criteria for world records include elevation change and separation. These criteria are included to ensure that a course is not excessively downhill or designed in such a way that a tail wind may unduly affect times. Elevation change is measured in terms of the altitude difference between the start and finish. A course must not drop more than 1m/km for it to be eligible for world records. Separation is the distance in a straight line between the start and the finish and is expressed as percentage of the total distance. To be legal for world record purposes, a course must have a separation of not greater than 50 per cent.
