POOR RUNNING ADVICE
After easily qualifying individually for the 1978 NCAA X-C Finals in Madison Wisconsin (easily breaking 30:50 for 10K in X-C) using high summer base mileage of 110MPW, then peaking perfectly for championship season, new, first year coach Russ Rodgers tells me to run only 50MPW leading into the 1979 Season [I ran 110MPW the summer before]. I listened to him and ran the 50MPW instead of 110 and as a result of not having that base, ran at least 8 seconds slower per mile that whole next X-C season (1979).
My fitness finally caught up some what that November in 1979 ......I came just 2 seconds per mile slower (11.7 seconds) in 1978 NCAA X-C Finals versus that 1978 NCAA regional race.
I can only imagine how much better our team would have been if Russ Rodgers had not come to our university.
I kinda take a lot of the blame myself, and just should have gone with my gut but was too young and in certain need of good coaching and guidance.... which was absent and necessary.
