Can someone please explain? Injury? Illness? Old age? I know he has dropped some bombs over the years but if you knew you had nothing better than a 4:12 in you, would you show up? Complete lack of fvcks given?

Sorry but please don't call 4:12 awful and completely disrespect the dude. I would like to see you run a 4:12 mile
Leo's great and all, no need to hate on him, but I think it's fair to question why he sometimes runs races like this. The race being "tactical" was not the issue here-he was off the back almost from the gun. It's just strange to see an Olympic silver medalist show up at early season meets and run times that are would be pretty good for a high schooler. The same thing happened last year. He's better than that and people expect him to race like it.
He's been running quite badly lately. It's not just an occasional bad race. He's been consistently slow. Not sure what's going on

Age. He's like 32 or 33 now. Not exactly prime years for a miler who has been competing for a long time.
Not sure why people are bashing OP. Leo has turned in a number of bad performances in a row now (and 4:12 is exceptionally poor). It's fair to wonder what's going on with one of the best US 1500m runners of the last decade, and ask if anyone has info the public doesn't know.
He was out of the top 3 in the US for the first time in like 10 years last year. Let's hope it's a slump and not the inevitable decline.
Honestly he is getting kind of old to be running the mile, but give the dude some respect. He's had an incredible and very long career, and has been one of the best runners in the world for a damn long time.

He's probably trying to peak for races later in the year like world championships in London. Not everyone ca. Be in top form year round. Unless youre in drugs but i guess if you're on different drug cycles then your performances can be up and down as well.
He is still fast enough to make Mexico's team for Worlds!

Yeah he came off a hard training week. Done speed work the afternoon before then had travel delays getting to NYC then the couple in the room next door were on their honeymoon. It all adds up, ya know.
Don't ANY of you know about him having pneumonia last year? ? ?
Have YOU had pneumonia? ? ?
Recovery takes time. Building up takes longer.
Was Manzano this inconsistent in college? I wonder if he's ever thought about returning to train under Vig. Vig was able to turn Robby Andrews around when he left Gags. Andrews was similar to Leo under Gags in that he was very inconsistent. Andrews isn't perfect by any means but he is certainly running better than he was a few years ago.

Ok, so I intentionally avoided the term in the past, but I think this post must exemplify the banned label for liberals?
First of all, I never said 4:12 was awful. I said Leo ran horrible (and for him, 4:12 is horrible) and I asked if you would show up if that's what you knew you had in the tank. Perhaps if Leo is sick or recovering from illness, or even just coming off heavy training, his time would be better served running the 4:10 heat at BU instead of another dead last in the Wanamaker Mile.
Secondly, 4:12 is not impressive in the professional running world, my safe-space protected friend. Maybe some time we can have a drink, you can show me your participation medals, and I will explain how qualification standards exists at the top of our sport.
Thirdly, I cannot run 4:12 anymore. I ran the equivalent (3:55 1500) more than a decade ago, but neither fact affects my ability to observe the performance of an Olympic silver medalist and thereby ask for some insight from an Internet discussion board.
Good chat. :)
I respect that he comes out even when he's not 100%. Most guys just stay home with their fragile egos and don't even try. He's a real racer.
He went home devastated!
I doubt he knew in advance he was going to run 4:12. I am sure that if he knew he was going to run 4:12 he would not have started.
You gotta believe that he had some clue from his training that he would run much better than 4:12.
Its not like he was getting an appearance fee to show up. Even if he got a comp hotel or something it was not worth it.
All I can believe is he had a bad day, got sick again at the last minute or something else happened, maybe tweaked a muscle at the start or at the end of warm up. Maybe he decided to start anyway hoping for the best. He deserves respect for at least finishing the race, but I am sure he was embarrassed with that and it was mentally hard to just finish.
The guy seems too honest and humble to just show up if he knew he would run like that.
Maybe he felt he could pull something out of the hat, as he has done before.

I was there. Not hating on Leo, but I have to say he looks a bit overweight
Jeez, leave the dude alone. He's got my respect for a great career after coming from hardship.
MAKE POSITIVITY LOUDER
maybe he had an off day?
Sounds like anemia or something similar. Heads to altitude, says training went great, yet is out the back early in races.
