Was Sonia O'Sullivan on drugs?
Glad these boards did not exist in the 1960s. Jim Ryun's 3:51.3--50 years ago--was far more ridiculous than any current performances.
Obviously, Dibaba is worthy of heightened suspicion because of Aden but we cannot just assume that every good performance is doped.
Ryun's performance was incredible more so because of his age (19). It's not like he smashed the world record mid-way into a pro career. You have to remember Ryun ran a sub-4 mile in just about every mile he ran the year before. He ran 3:55 at age 18 and 3:59 on a dirt track against high school kids.
There was no doubt in my mind that Genzebe was going to very good. Genzebe won WJXC at age 17 and again the following year. I thought her success would come in the 5K/10K like her family members. Genzebe moves up to the senior ranks and instantly becomes a star as expected. For several years, she won some big races, she didn't win any global championships, but made a few finals. Then in 2014 something happened, in addition to changing coaches, she went from very good to great and the following year to off-the-charts great. All things considered, I guess the 3:55 indoor mile she ran was possible and even her indoor 3K performance, but her 3:50 outdoor mile the follow year and then I found out she ran her last 800 in 1:57...that's was beyond greatness, it is unbelievable. Genzebe ran faster than the doped up Chinese record I thought would be around when my grand kids were running track. Right now, I think she could challenge the doped 800m WR. As of right now, a woman who has no 800m on record, is possibly capable of breaking the world record. - Something just does not compute...I am more than suspicious.
