Getting ready to train for a Ragnar!!!
I'd love to hear your recommendations for headlamps--not too heavy!
I prefer top-straps: I get headaches if the band is too tight.
I run both in street-lamp-lit roads as well as dirt roads and trails.
Thanks!

I have a Nathan Nebula Fire. No top strap but I've never had any issues with the band. Works really well, fairly bright, and a re-chargeable & long lasting battery! Works well for all my night trail runs.

This is the one I used.
I tried several before settling on this.
I think it's the best running-specific one.
There is a girl at the club that has the nicest set of headlamps I've seen in quite some time.
Solite 250EX
Go to home Depot. They sell them in packs of three. Really big radius of light.
I've tried a lot of of headlamps. Petzls, Black Diamonds, cheapies, 18650 battery based (bright but heavy and bounce). I don't love any of them.
But this one is by far the best balance of cost ($30), brightness, longevity per charge (usb rechargeable battery), convenience, and comfort. I HAVE to have a strap over my head if I have to wear a lamp for more than an hour; otherwise the squeezing around my head to prevent it from moving starts causing a headache.
This is much better than a headlamp. Nice even bright light.
I use a Petzl Tikkina. Cheap ($20), lightweight, two settings (hi/lo). Gets the job done.

I can't imagine a waist pack being very effective.
and $179??? That's stupidly overpriced for some cheap fabric and a $10 flashlight.
I often find myself aiming my head to illuminate a particular upcoming obstacle (rock/root/hole), runner/biker, turn, or trail marker. There'd be no way to do that with a waist pack.
Black Diamond is coming out with a new Spot headlamp that is 300 lumens. Should be out in the summer. Current Spot is 200. Great light, lightweight, bright, unobtrusive.

Many people swore by the current version of the Spot so I gave in and tried it. Wish I could have my $ back. No top strap which I knew might be a problem. But worse than that, once I started to sweat I could not get it to stop slipping up and down my forehead. I'd take it off, crank it down to the point of discomfort, and sometimes just a few minutes later it'd be loose again. Maybe it's because I sweat a ton? Anyhow the Foxelli stays put just fine for me.
I saw this one and it looks interesting. I wonder if anyone has any experience with it.

Good luck!
I run almost exclusively in the early morning (night) hours on trails. I have never found a better light, especially considering the price.
It comes with a 2600 mAh 18650 rechargeable battery. splurge and get the 3400 mAh.
I can get 2.5 hours on high (900 claimed lumens). During extended runs, I bring an extra battery.
I can't rave about this light enough.

does it secure (and rotate up/down) to the strap with rubber holders or are they solid plastic? I had a similar light, but the part that secured the light to the strap were rubber rings that the light just sat in. It was great running slowly and allowed precise rotation to any angle up or down, but as soon as I got to a reasonable running pace it bounced like crazy and became useless. I'm not that quick either.

Yes. It rotates up and down. It has several "clicks " that cam point almost to your feet to up in the sky. Absolutely no bouncing. Ive used Petzel, Black Diamond, Chinese knock offs, etc. and this is by far the best I have used.

Total junk. Ive tried these Chinese knock-offs. They last about a month til the sweat kills them.
