My white spikes are filthy after a recent cross country. The metal spikes don't come out as they are permanent. They are short and not too sharp - can I wash them in the machine or will it damage it? Thanks.

Do you not have a sink?
Give it a whirl, What can go wrong?
Yes but I'm sure the machine will do a much better job. They're white thats the thing!

Fascism in the USA, that's what.
Not everything has to be white.

You wore white spikes outside? I reserve my white spikes for indooor track or treadmill running only. You should really invest in a pair of outdoor spikes.
Add a couple of pounds of roofing nails to give it a good scrub.
It's been done before. Nylon and plastic
wrote a great piece on the old dyestat spikes section about 12 years ago detailing what to do. can't find it now.
Here's a basic run down:
1. turn on some Social Distortion
2. Get a large 5 gallon bucket (home depot type), and fill with cool water, and liquid detergent (i like arm and hammer personally). not much soap is needed-- 3/4 cup for 4 gallons of water. stir well. (paint stick, large mixing spoon, etc). Since they're white, you'll probably want to add some oxyclean. stir
3. take laces out of spikes.
4. rinse spikes with hose to get as much mud/ dirt/ rock debris out. get a soft nylon brush and scrub gently. this is key to get as much debris out as possible. you can be more aggressive on the sole of the spike, since it's plastic.
5. place spikes and laces in bucket. let it sit for a 10 minutes (grab a beer/ gatorade, and enjoy the music).
6. Get an old wash cloth, and scrub shoes and laces inside bucket, making sure to get every area a few times.
7. rinse spikes with hose again, and get all soapy water out. Replace soapy (and now muddy) bucket water with clean water. Take that nylon brush, and make sure that all dirt is out, and lightly scrub shoes in clean water to get any remaining soap and dirt out. rinse laces.
8. Hit the shoes with the hose.
9. Shake 'em out a few times, and stuff with newspaper/ phone book pages. Replace papers after an hour or 2, and let sit in the shade, overnight.
10. Race.
Take them in the shower with you. Also bring some laundry detergent and a small brush. You should be able to figure it out from here.
PS DO NOT USE THE AREA JUST BELOW WAIST LINE AS LEVERAGE WITH SPIKES FACING INWARD.
