It was public but fortunately the store was not that busy and only a few customers heard it. When I told this guy I am a runner, he said "You look like you were just put together. Tall, skinny, big feet..."...And it made me think, am I really that disproportionate? When someone says you look like you were "just put together"..it makes you doubt yourself. It kinda tells me that I'm never going to look like an elite distance runner. The guy didn't even think I'm a runner.
Well, Mark, one possibility is that people are so accustomed to obesity now in the midst of what is commonly called an "obesity epidemic" that skinnier people have come to look increasingly uncommon, eliciting such a response.
I'm in my 50s, 6'3" and about 172 pounds - tall, slim and have size 13 feet. I get lots of appreciative stares and an occasional compliment from some very good looking women at the gym or pool (Take a suck-pill, Xfitguy_the_real_one_1). It's great having a ripped body rather than a moose-nose sniffing over the belt-buckle. But I am slightly more of a gym-and-pool creature overprinted a middle-distance- distance-runner's body than I was before I stopped running competitively around age 40.
