Trump is a defense attorney's worst nightmare. He can't keep his mouth shut and would undermine his case with tweets, lies, and a constantly changing story. Putting him on the witness stand would be a prosecutor's dream.
In a criminal trial, the prosecutor cannot force the defendant to testify. A defendant can testify voluntarily, but Trump's lawyers would very strongly advise him not to testify if he is ever tried criminally. It's different in a civil case.
