The issue of schools reopening is not an easy one for many obvious reasons, but the trump klan continuing to disregard the health risks and intentionally contradicting each other to create chaos and a total clusterfk if just criminal. I’m going to stick to this - every extra American life lost in excess of what the US curve should have looked like if response had been similar to most of Europe, has been unnecessary. I don’t know what that number is but it’s definitely tens of thousands of deaths by now. The president is responsible.

Yes!
And what do you do about it?
I think it would behoove the democratic party to have a prominent ad going into the election featuring an Epidemiologist explaining exactly what you said in plain, simple terms, and laying out the consequence with stark numbers and even starker images of the victims in the background. THe takewaway would be that now that we know, and we do know, we cannot allow this for another four years.
Second, I think the dems need to reach out in a new manner to the demographic that got Trump elected, and simplify their message and do so in a way they can relate to. Trump did tap into a massive part of the populace that feels unheard and un-represented, and it's not just devising plans that will help them, it is selling them those plans so they understand it and believe the messenger. It doesn't help get the plan realized if the message is delivered in a way that they feel like they are being conned.
Lastly, there is a real lot to be learned by Trump's success. I think it would be wise and necessary to do so. HIs shtick is simply this: motivating by creating a belief that someone is stealing that which is rightfully yours is way more powerful than a nebulous promise to improve your situation. That is it in a nutshell and he hits that right out of the park. And try it out on yourself and you'll see how much more energizing fear of getting stolen from is than maybe getting something.
So, to do that, dems need to play that back on Trump - that his reign has served to steal their most precious assets: their loved ones (to a mismanaged pandemic response), their jobs, their health, their respect, their right to end income inequality, their right to a taxation system that stops favoring trump and his wealthy cronies, etc. And play the trump game as well by portraying the opposite side as demonic: trump and his cronies represent the billionaire money class mercilessly ripping off the working class and under-served. Make anything else seem preposterous: 'Trump is not the people's billionaire'
