One scenario would be he survives impeachment, loses the election and gets convicted for charges in 2021 with a Democrat as president.
He's not getting a pardon then.
He needs to do the Nixon thing, step down and have the Republican VP pardon him in advance.
A Dem president would deny Pence pardoning Trump because,
United States Constitution, Article II, Section 2:
... and he [the President] shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.
