Try the usual thought experiment here: If Obama had done exactly the same kind of thing, what would the GOP response have been?
And, because it's Trump--what will their response be now? Crickets . . .

You forget that Trump was fined for laundering Russia money at one of his casinos. That he was caught on tape saying: "Grab 'em by the puccy." That he has been videotaped cheating at golf. So yes, Trump is that stupid.
Evidently there is an audiotape of Trump making his whistleblowing comment to that foreign leader.
Russian money propped up the trump real estate business...not the casino business. Right? Unclear if it was laundering, but probably it was, yes.
The U.S. Government charged him with money laundering.

That is fewer than the number of porn stars Trump had unprotected sex with.
That is far , far fewer that the number of times he banned his own daughter.

The following link discusses the rich Russian gamblers who favored Trump's casino.

well ok we know he didn't follow money laundering rules and we know that russians liked to gamble there, but we don't know if trump was fined for laundering russian money at the casino.
I mean we know enough for sure that we don't have to start guessing.
If I were a religious person, based on your accurate description of Trumpworld, I would believe Trump to be the devil.
As it is, he is a serial lying criminal who does not believe in Democracy and of course a first-class a-hole.

There is not guessing.
I'm not convinced that Trump is not "stupid on these things". So far he has been enabled, and openly so, not only by elected Republicans, but also by the 43% of Americans who still believe he is doing a good job. Surround yourself with Yes Men and Yes Women, and get away with stuff long enough, you can believe you are impervious to consequences.
I had long ago said that if Trump didn't go down directly due to what Mueller found (and he will be impeached for Obstruction), that he is so criminal that if he got a second term, he would do something new by then that would be his undoing. He is not a good person. He has no moral compass. He has no sense about what is wrong or right for a President to do. It's just a matter of time with him, and justice will ultimately prevail.
but flagpole he's survived and stayed out of jail and prospered for 70 years despite having no personal ethics or moral code.
That's what I'm talking about. He has some innate sense of how to stay out of serious trouble. Part of that is the corrupt NY and NYC politics, but it's more than that. He knows where the line is, in his lizard brain. And he is charismatic so he gets other people to do the dirty work for him.
Of course, you could say the same about other crime bosses - they stay out of jail for 40 years and then one day someone flips on him and it's RICO time baby. Off to Sing Sing.
I'm really trying hard to figure out what Trump might have promised in a phone call to another national leader that completely freaked out someone in the IC. I mean what could it possibly be? That wasn't just one of his 'jokes.'
I can't even imagine. But somehow a person in the IC thought it was an immediate threat to the US and the WH is breaking the law to hide it.
I suspect it will not be all that much if we do find out.
Also, surprising that the IC listens in on calls between trump and other leaders. I did not know that.

I remember hearing the same thing about Bush, Cheney, Henry Paulson, and like three dozen other people. People were certain they were going to jail for starting a war on false premises. In all honesty, Trump is small potatoes compared to that administration. Sure he's mean, and yeah he's probably mentally retarded at this point, but it's all hot air.
When you actually have no soul and political savvy then you get never ending war in the Middle East and the worst financial collapse since the Great Depression (although both of these things are looking more likely every day, but I still put the chances of materialization relatively low). Until that happens again, I'll rank Trump ahead of Bush and accept the fact that he won't go to jail.
i've said this a million times...NYS politicians really really want to put spanks in jail. They won't be bought off by him anymore,. They will be able to run many campaigns on 'I'm tough enough to take down donald j trump.'
Trump has committed decades of financial crimes. He's going to pay for that, in NY State.
To be fair, it might be fines rather than jail time. But Trump is going to spend the rest of his life fighting the criminal justice and tax enforcement system.

Other than Melania gazing longingly at Trudeau, this is your typically insignificant attempt at trying to connect two dots which don't connect.

It might be an issue to dismiss as inconsequential or overreacting on the part of the whistleblower except for the fact that the WH is stepping in the way. That's the more telling part of the story. So it probably is something significant.

The justice system would require both in a case like Trump's. Celebrity, and ex-presidency, will not save him. Look no further than the penalty imposed on a celebrity (Felicity Huffman) who paid $15,000 for her daughter to cheat her way into USC. She not only pays a fine ($30,000) but spends two weeks in a woman's jail, and one year of probation, and some 250 hours of community service. Double the money she paid as a fine. Not a lot of jail time, but $15,000 is nothing compared to the billions Trump is likely on the line for.
maybe. but rememeber that the WH has taken the position that it will not cooperate with the house oversight committees in any way shape or form. The WH refuses to agree that the house has oversight rights over the exec branch. So this could be just one more piece of that. Just refuse everything, every time. automatically.
But still...to freak out an IC official whatever trump said must have been something.

The connection is: Trump bigly jealous and yugly embarrassed. Trump minions scour Canada until the find something to use … more likely doctored a video to use against Trudeau. Trump gets revenge, but Melania further cements her escape plan to Canada.

They're not supposed to be monitoring Americans, but trying to monitor significant foreign actors is their job description.
As was reported a year or so back, Trump often uses his personal unsecured phone to talk with foreign leaders.

I had my phone monitored for a year of more after I let a company for which I had worked on a top secret project for the government. That is standard protocol. I expect all people at the U.S. government level to be subjected a lot more scrutiny than I was.
