Is it just me, or is Trump really not that much different than what a Hillary Clinton presidency would have been?
Seriously, when you cut through all the noise and rhetoric and look at what Trump has actually fought for, I don't see a lot of differences.
Foreign Policy-
Its the same basic foreign policy we had under Obama of fighting small, silent wars all over Africa and the Middle East. Of course Trump had to declare that anything Obama did was a total disaster. So basically Trump increased military spending by about $50 billion and sided more with Saudi Arabia then Iran. But he is also not escalating a war in Afghanistan like Obama did. Its just rearranging the furniture on the Titanic.
Healthcare -
Again, look at the healthcare system we have now. Its not that different from what Obama left us. Trump made some changes. But at the end of the day, the private insurance health industry like Obamacare. Obama already sold out to the same industry that controls Republicans. Trump did nothing to fight to fundamentally change the system.
Taxes-
As an accountant who has worked on taxes professionally I know what I'm talking about on this matter. The difference between Trump and Hillary is just a matter of how best to reward corporate interests. That's it. Trump supported a corporate tax rate cut. Hillary supported keeping the tax rates the same but hollowing it for the wealth through things like tax credits to invest in low income housing. Meanwhile, whether you know it or not Obama kept much of the Bush tax cuts and those were going to remain in place even if Hillary was President. A lot of American made out better on their taxes largely because of the expansion of the child tax credit. Which is actually a tax break championed and originated by Bill Clinton.
Trade and Immigration-
You would think this is the one issue where Trump has totally transformed U.S. policy. But look what we have. There is no wall. For all the headline of immigration arrests, illegal migration continues and U.S. business continue to have access to cheap foreign labor. The "border tax" had serious merit but Trump did nothing to fight for that. Trump's tax system actually rewards all the more U.S. corporations doing business in foreign lands. A trade deal was struck with Mexico and Canada that is reportedly not that much different than what we have had under the old NAFTA.
The only thing that is remotely transformative is the tariffs and those can go away any time. This is Donald Trump we are talking about so obviously at some point there is going to be a "deal" with China. I'm not holding my breath for any serious permanent change to occur when a deal is struck.
Honesty and Integrity -
Donald trump has little honesty and integrity. But the truth is Hillary did shady stuff even if it was legal. The Clinton foundation was more a conduit to do political favors and gain political allies. There was a very Nixonian feel to Hillary.
That is how I see things. Am I wrong?
