I hadn't paid too much attention to Beto until he announced running for President. I was not impressed with his first day truly on the national scene. He sounded a bit like an air head. Of course I will back any opponent to Trump, but so far I am not on the Beto train.
if you are interested, watch a few of his videos - esp what he said about the nfl and kneeling. Guy is a bit of a loose cannon but has a charisma and brains that no one else has. And he has crossed the aisle many, many times through his life. He's no political beast. A true statesman, I think. I'm a huge fan.
but he'll do a few weird things...he's trying to be 100% authentic and that will cost him some gaffes.
You get things done in DC by being a political beast. LBJ with Civil Rights Act comes to mind.
Obama has mentioned a few times that he wishes he had been better about greasing palms and playing politics early on in his presidency and it took him time to learn how to get things done in DC. That's the trade off for a younger, less experienced person as president. And as we've seen with Trump, when you're a complete moron and the worst deal maker ever then you really can't get anything done.
I think the US will need someone with a lot of experience in 2020. We're running on autopilot right now as evidenced by the number of open positions in the State Department and other cabinet level offices, and we might need someone who knows how to play the DC game well to make a nice smooth landing
