You don't seem to understand the brilliance of president Trump. TPP is bad precisely because it covers so many countries. Our advantage is diluted that way. When we negotiate with one or two countries at a time, we have much greater leverage over other countries. That's why we signed a deal with Mexico and Canada. That will put more pressure on Japan to sign a deal with US. That will in turn put even more pressure on other countries to sign bilateral deals with us. And all those deals combined will be far better for us than that disaster called TPP.
you have no idea what you are talking about and neither does trump.
Let’s be fair here. TPP was opposed by all major candidates in the 2016 POTUS election. So, it’s not just Trump who would’ve shut this down.
I strongly dislike Trump and his policies. That being said the one area where I think he has the right idea—but very bad execution—is his posture towards China. China needs to be stopped both in the trade arena (they play dirty) and in the pacific rim influence arena.
Most western powers and most US allies agree with the above about China. So, Tiny could’ve built a strong coalition to oppose Chinas influence in Asia AND finally call them out re: forced tech transfer, currency manipulation, and copyright infringement. He could’ve had a lot of support for that.
Instead, he basically attacks all of our allies, including our closest trading partners, and killed the TPP. The TPP would’ve been YUGE in regards to helping allies in Asia and hurting China.
Basically, Trump is a child with very little understanding or nuance when it comes to trade and foreign policy. While he has some good instincts, his policies will hurt—not help the USA.
