The thing is...Donald Trump is maybe the one person who could make an effective improvement in gun control.
The other day I was reading a conservative column in the NYT (imagine that) and it had a suggestion that made sense to me: different minimum ages to possess/purchase different kinds of firearms. At age 18 you get to have a rifle; at 21 a revolver; at 25 a semi handgun; at 30 assault weapons. I'm not saying those are the platonically correct terms, nor am I suggesting they would stop all mass murderers (Las Vegas, anyone?); but they would be some help and I think responsible gun owners and the anti-gun nuts both could live with them. A lot of the more spectacular school killings have been by young guys with
And DJT is the one guy who could get that done. His people are going to stay with him, no matter what, and a lot of moderate gun-control folks (not a contradiction in terms, by the way) would be happy to see *any* positive step.
Just as it took a Richard Nixon, with his secure anticommunist credentials, to open relations between China and the U.S., so it would take a Donald Trump or someone like him to break the current impasse. You think a Democratic president could get it done, in the foreseeable future? Not bloody likely.
