I don't think I ever would have been considered a bookworm, but I did read a fair amount growing up. I read more now as an adult. I did read books like Harry Potter, but I mostly read non-fiction as well as some classics (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, 1984, etc).
Anyway, my parents used to make fun of me for reading and told me I told me I wouldn't get a girlfriend if I read books. They told me this even when I was in college and was studying. Now several years later I have both a great job and a great girlfriend and am frequently told I am an excellent writer and have an impressive vocabulary, direct products of reading books. I don't really dwell on this as I think it's pretty trivial overall, but I can't help but think discouraging your kids from reading, let alone actively making fun of them for it, is quite terrible parenting, but then perhaps I'm biased since I greatly value books and education.
Thoughts?
