Distance to Sprints wrote:
In the early 2000's, I coached for a year with Kathy Rounds (1997 US Champ at 800m). She said that she would run an average of 23-25 miles per week. During the early part of the season, a little higher than that to build strength and less than that while competing. She did a lot of speed development and form work. Everything on the track was quality.
Here coach while running in the 90's was Randy Huntington, who also coached Mike Powell when he set the world record in the long jump. That may explain some of the more sprinter type work Kathy did during that time.
What about cross training such as long distance biking, swimming, Nordic skiing, etc.? How many miles did she do during that early season and did she include tempo, fartlek, and perhaps an interval session here or there. We have gotten a lot smarter in what we do compared to the old days. Yet we still must work all three energy systems specifically to our event.
