Considering Cranny was the only XC runner to receive first team honors, grades clearly are not significantly inflated. Good effort by her.

The Feds should shut down federal grant/welfare funds to racist schools.

Hey racist. You must have a pretty low self esteem. Instead of focusing on objective measures or arguments you bust out a "I'll make fun of how their language sounds" and "I'll point out that they're different." You are right; us Asians ARE different. We're pushed very strongly to succeed academically, especially us Asian Americans since many of us come from economically humble families.
Engineering, healthcare, and law to a lesser extent are the careers we pursue due to their stability, relative meritocracy, and remuneration.
The other poster was not incorrect in pointing out how Asians get penalized for the success of their brethren.

There's nothing worse than ANTI-Semites blasting the people who make the fave food of Jews ;-)

Just from the posted link 3.57 seems to be the average gpa from 2011 and that figure is quoted in a bunch of the other google results.
The 'ideal' seems to be that the average student should be getting in the C+/B- range in classes, so Stanford definitely has significant grade inflation based on this benchmark. This 3.57 average is also somewhat higher than the 3.34 average from 1995 and way higher than the sub 3 averages from before 1970, assuming the info is accurate. Other major universities also have similar trends, which is why grade inflation is considered a significant issue. For example, here's Harvard's data (their average was 3.05 in 1975, 3.36 in 1995, and 3.64 in 2015):
http://www.gradeinflation.com/Harvard.htmlAlso, since their average gpa has been higher than the 3.30 minimum needed to be nominated for Academic All American every reported year since 1986, the fact that Cranny was the only XC runner to make first team either shows that the selection process relies on more than just grades or that Stanford's runners are relatively below average students.
(Even given grade inflation, a 3.98 gpa is still impressive)
A lot of the Stanford runners are poor students. People like Erik Olson, the Rosa twins, etc. didn't even make the academic teams, meaning they have below a 3.0 GPA.

Happy 2017!
Runners of all people should feel ashamed of themselves to criticize another runner with a high gpa. Afterall, the work ethic to get to the top in running translates into the classroom as well for disciplined people.
Your GPA is about 80% work ethic, 20% intelligence. At the end, with college in particular, the hard workers who do ALL the assignments, which helps learn the material, are the ones who get the best gpas.
No, Elise Cranny is probably not a genius, but she's super smart. Doesn't mean she's better than you at everything.
Ask any college graduate and they'd tell you that you don' t have to be a genius to get good grades.
Unless your'e a math major maybe...

if you clicked on the link in the article it says he has a 3.97 gpa. pretty damn good for an engineering major
GPA + MCAT/LCAT/GRE is what it's all about. Plus a helping of undergraduate research projects.
Why did this thread spin out of control with links on Astafa Powell and. Criticism of a top/student athlete, sheesh.
Mods must be hungover today.
How fast can she run a 400? That's what matters!

that's just not true
If anyone in this thread thinks they are smarter than Elise Cranny, they are wrong. Shes better at life than she is at running
It is very true. If you are a runner on the team who competed in at least 50% of the competitions and didn't make the academic teams, you have a low GPA.
Thats a bummer shes not a blonde but dumb, easy girls get a lot further in life.
I would be impressed if she was majoring in math or physics.
Who cares, she's slow anyway.
Yes, but did she look relaxed obtaining it?

What is the LCAT?
