Frankie Goes To Hollywood: Relax
Frankie Goes To Hollywood: Relax
I knew him from UVA, but Paul Ereng was unknown enough in the 88 Olympics to be misidentified when he popped through the crowd to win the 800. I don't recall him doing a whole lot more after that...
Manfred Mann was definitely NOT a one-hit wonder. He first drew notice with "Doo-Wah-Ditty" in the 60s, "The Mighty Quinn" got a lot of airplay in the 70s and any runner who remembers the early MTV days would remember "The Runner" from the early 80s. One of the best running songs of all-time, and the video contained footage from the 1972 Olympics in Munich.
OK. I'll have to take your word for it - I've never heard of anything else from Manfred Man, and I've heard them mentioned as One Hit Wonders before.
Dang, Relax! is tough to beat. How about: Incense and Peppermints/Strawberry Alarm Clock.

Just use the search. Every album, every single, chart-toppers, members, discographies, similar bands. Some of the one-hit wonders had larger careers than one would initially think. Toto, for example.
Agree. Toto was not a one-hit wonder. Both Africa and Rosanna were hits.
OK. Toto was a two-hit wonder then.
Cool pimpim Flagpole Willy, Dan Hartman did "Instant Replay" which was a much bigger hit than the one you cited.
I saw the VH1 All-Time One Hit Wonders piece once. You know who they picked (correctly) and she'd absolutely loathe being on the list? Sinead O'Connor. One Hit Wonder, for sure.
He's right on Manfred Mann. How could you not remember once of the most misconskrewed lyrics of all-time:
Blinded by the light.
Wrapped up like a douche,
Another runner in the light.
Quincy Watts had an almost matchless career in HS and Age-group USATF track. Still holds 2 national youth age-group records. A sharp peak on the international scene, yes, but he certainly had the credentials at all the preceeding levels.
You guys have to be kidding with those pretender bands on your lists. We retired that title decades ago.
Malmo,
Respectfully, I have never heard of any other Dan Hartman song. Instant Replay? I'll have to find it and see if it's one I've actually heard.
I like your link. I've been there a few times. Pretty funny stuff.
I like the misheard lyric from Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds:

Francie Larrieu ranks right up there with Steve Scott.
As for music, don't miss Tommy Two-tone/867-5309 (Jenny, Jenny).
My favorite misconstrued lyric comes from my wife, who went through high school thinking the words to the Who's "Who are you?" were:
New awning
New, new
New, new
New awning
New, new
New, new
"I wanna know -
Have you ever seemed deranged?"
After pushing the Javelin record from approximately 320' to 367', did Tom Petronoff do much on a world level near that mark again? Not quite Beamonesque, but at least comparable.
The correct lyrics to "Blinded By The Light" (as written by Bruce Springsteen) are:
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a duece,
another runner in the night.
However, Manfred Mann (with Springsteen's permission) made changes to the musical arrangement. Listening to the song closely it seems he made changes to the lyrics also.
I think Springsteens lyrics were:
Blinded by the light,
cut loose like a duece,
another runner in the night.
Which Mann changed to:
Blinded by the light,
revved up like a duece,
another runner in the night.

Sorry have to argue this. Ereng ran the fastest time in the world in 89 (zurich) ranked #1, was 4th at WC in 91 ranked #4 and was ranked #3 in 88. You do not get the ranking honors on one race. Probably career shorten on the toughness of the Kenyans 800 field.
Foghat was no one-hit wonder! Maybe for Casey Casem, but not for 70s rockers everywhere.
Otherwise, how about 83 world cross champ Bekele Debele? Or Mark Deady? Or Tim Keough?
Not Komen ... he ran well under 13 from 95-98, and maybe in 99, too.
