My buddy has a co-worker who asked "who's that?" the day John Glenn died.
This is YOUR fault. Hope you do better with your next wife choice.
It's hardly surprising that a woman who was maybe 6 in 1972 doesn't know who Jim Ryun is. If you don't like following a fringe sport gain weight and watch football like the rest of 'Muricans.
I discovered that when i ask people at work "do you know who usain bolt is?"
50% have no idea, never heard of him
And 50% say "duh, it's Usain bolt, everyone knows who usain bolt is!"
Grounds for divorce never seemed so clear
Congrats on raising a kid who wants to "be the next ________" instead of blazing his own trail. Sounds like a winner.
He had better run faster than Jim if he wants to make an Olympic team.
Or did your kid mean he wants to be a congressman from Kansas?
So he wants to be a DOPER???????

Wrong. Jim Ryun's 1500 Meter PR of 3:33.1 is almost a full second faster than the US Trials record. So, no the kid does not need to run faster than Jim Ryun to make the Olympics. Jim also made the Olympic team 3 times which is pretty impressive during the amateur era.
I'm pretty sure 68 and even 72 Ryun would have made every US Olympic team in history.

Presuming your son is at least 5 years old, and your wife is at least 23 years old, its possible she has not heard of Jim Ryun since 1998 or so.
Congrats that you helped your son learn of and appreciate this legendary runner.
Seems like a great opportunity for you to help your son educate your wife.
Does anyone on here realize that Jim Ryun peaked at 21? Our training was so foolish back then.
Add in bouncy tracks, medical advances, and improved equipment...then you know how fast Jim Ryun really was.
We should compare people to the people they ran against.
Lots of runners could be called the Greatest of all time.
Only really true if his PR was during the olympic trials.

My wife has been attending our son's track meets for over 8+ years now - junior high school through college.
She has no idea what a good time is for 1500 or 800 compared to a bad time for him...or anyone else on the planet for that matter.
She wouldn't know if he broke the world record.

Initially, everyone doesn't know who anyone is. But then at some point you learn who someone is. We are not born with innate knowledge of who Jim Ryun, John Glenn, or anyone else is. But at some point you hear or read or see. Or you never do. Or you learn at an apparently unacceptable age (like mom or coworker) who some one is.

Jim would have nearly lapped the Oly 1500 this year!
I played Scattergoriess with a 39yo American woman last night who had never heard of Derek Jeter.
She later couldn't name a President starting with R.
She...she didn't win the game.

Right. Because the race would have played out exactly the same way if someone had taken the pace out hard from the gun.
Similarly, my high school football team would have won the last Super Bowl. We once scored 49 points in a game, and the Broncos only scored 24 points in the Super Bowl.

What's the Oly 1500? Is that some sort of NASCAR race?

You haven't heard of the Oly 1500! It's the "working mans" beer.
