Hey all,
I realize I'm not near the ability or speed of most of the people on this thread but was hoping to still get some advice anyways. So I worked a part time job two summers ago where I did a lot of standing, which also gave me ample opportunity to get some stretching in throughout my day. My feet were usually sore after a long shift but I managed to get my runs in (5-6 days a week), some weight lifting and LOTS of foam rolling to help my legs recover (20-25 mpw).
I ran a 10 mile road race averaging just under 7:40's. Legs felt great. I ran in high school at about 160 (i'm 6'3") and weigh about 200 now from a combination of weight lifting, rowing in college and just all around less active lifestyle.
Anyways..I stopped foam rolling after I had read negative reviews and different accounts of how it wasn't really beneficial as it had been advertised as. But for me it seemed to work and go along well with my training and helping to recover. I really haven't been able to get close to that time in 10 mile races since- could foam rolling be something that works for me even if a significant portion of the running population seemingly says otherwise? I appreciate anyone who takes the time to give me some good feedback. Happy holidays everyone.

Don't listen to this idiot! People use foam rollers because they work. -
Foam rollers have been popular for 10+ years. A little too long to be labeled the latest fad.
-
If it works for you and isn't hurting you then keep on doing it, simple as that.

awesome thank you- appreciate your responses. Happy holidays

niether key to success nor fad.
May be useful for some who are prone to knots in muscles. Roll in moderation - 'bout once a week -
Why once a week and not more? Legitimate question. Is it detrimental to do once a day ?
-
I roll once a day to prevent it band issues. The real key to success, however, is good training.

depends on the roller. If it's one with knobbly bits, too much rolling might cause muscle damage/ inflammation leading to raised creatine kinase levels -
Foam rollers are a great tool. I really like using it for fascia release in my calves.

The video above is how you would relieve tight calves. Ahhhhh -
You could try it. To me, it was a lot of work, almost as much as running.

I was a cripple about 18 months ago, every time I started to run my lower limbs would ache, so I got a foam roller and it is great. Really it is a performance enhancer, achilles, calves, quads, itb, hamstrings and lower back.
-
I wouldn't be able to run if I didn't foam roll. It is a very rare occasion I do any more stretching than leg swings and that is only before going fast. I usually hit the foam roll twice a day if I am able. About 10-12 passes thru each major muscle.

I vote fad.

Buy some thick PVC pipe cut to whatever length you want. Cheaper and just as effective as a foam roller.
PVC Pipe
Tennis ball
Baseball
Softball
Golf ball
Pretty much all you need to roll with.

Foam rollers aren't made out of gold. They're not expensive at all. -
