What do you think of his decision? Smart or selfish?

Personally, I understand why he's doing it but don't like it. I think there is more in life than money. Insurance policies exist for a reason. He's been paid to the tune of nearly 90k per year to attend Stanford (Stanford costs $66k per year, I'm asssuming 25% tax bracket) and play football for them.
To quit on his teammates mid-season isn't what I'd advise my son to do.
But the same time since the adults in charge, the so-called educators, have been basically saying for the last 20 years, "Money is the only thing that matters", I'm not too upset about it.
To me, one of the biggest travesties in education is how bad the administrators have behaved in recent years. I grew up in Texas and Texas and Texas A&M don't even play each other anymore because the adults have made it all about money. The conference realignments and constant mid-week basketball games are embarrassing.
He's just taking what society has been teaching (no loyalty, due what is only your own self interest) to its logical extreme.
