So I was running through podcasts and came upon this gem where Nick Symmonds says he plans on running a marathon in 2018:
http://www.finalsurge.com/blog/article/podcast-25-nick-symmondsWhat do you think he can really do? Timewise?
I'm thinking a 2:45.
I believe the historic Boston Q mark of 3 hours is attainable for 80- 90% of people with modest to good running ability over the middle distances and a solid 6 - 8 month training buildup to marathoning.

Yeah, how many 15:30 guys do you know that can hit 21.9 on a 200?
http://www.milesplit.com/videos/96530/workout-wednesday-cas-loxsom-and-nick-symmonds-sprint-workout
Did you read what I wrote at all? Did you read his training log at all? I'm talking about 1k reps at 5:00 pace, 800s in 2:25, tempos at 5:30 pace, that kind of thing. In fact I explicitly said "excluding his fast 800 pace workouts"
Be fair, he did run 3:36 in 2012 and 3:34 in 2013.
Be fair it's 2017 in a few days
Well, you know he won't run the first half in less than 1:30, then maybe 1:02 to close? So yeah, I'll say 2:32.

let's not forget that he ran a 1:42.95 and was 5th in the best ever olympic 800m final.he said even he did not he was capable of getting under 1:43 in his lifetime. he was visibly ecstatic about that run, something genuinely cool to witness. he's had a much better career than duane solomon.the guy rubs people the wrong way for whatever reason, i get that, i don't care for his personality either..... but he's generally good for the sport and has no illusions of being some dominant superstar. also, he's won A LOT of USA titles and has been historically good at being prepared to win and do well in big races.seems like you don't like him based on an opinion and haven't examined the facts of his as a runnerhe's good at marketing, making money, and has given money to other USA runners to get to the trials. that's amazing! I don't know any other USA distance runner who has done that while actively participating in the sport a welli'd love to read how you react to this message, because it's laced with undeniable factswho gives a sh*t if he does or doesn't run a marathon?! dathan ritzenhein said he was in the best shape ever for NYC and he DNF'd. talk is talk, things come up and don't go as planned...waiting for your response.
DickSymmonds wrote:
I predict a DNF from him. Nick Symmonds is the definition of a softy and I wouldnt be suprised if he purposely chokes on his run gum forcing him to drop out. He's probably just doing it so if he does somehow finish, he can drink all the beer he wants afterwards and get wasted out of his mind. This guy is a joke and looks like he's straight out of a P90 X infomercial. Nick Symmonds saying he will run a marathon is like my goldfish telling me he's gonna climb up a tree. It's just not gonna happen and plus goldfish don't talk.

I was replying to the guy that said Nick couldn't run 4:10 for a mile in 2012.

I say about 2:30 if Lance the poser could do it, a runner like Nick is no problem.
Lance ran 2:46:42 with pacers. I'm looking for Nick to run about the same, then trademark a series of Beer Marathons.
Lemme tell you something here mr.why be a pryck, I've more than examined the facts of Nick Symmonds as a runner and I can factually say that he is a nasty bean burrito butt wipe! Plus I don't belive any of these stats that you are throwing out. You have not cited one source so there for I have no reason to not believe that these facts are being pulled straight out of yoir wahoo. Seems as if he's starting to brain wash people with is dope filled run gum. oh brother when will it stop Will be refreshing this page every single 5 seconds waiting for your response
Sorry, again. I'm off my meds, and my boyfriend left me two days ago.

Nick we know it's you plz stop thank you
2:26-28 all out... just saying 2:40 is still hard but tempo...it's still abusive but the effort isn't hard. If I can run that nick can run it pretty easy if he wants to... obviously its abusive on the legs but his vo2 has to be high enough that the effort would be easy.

What can you do if you run all out?
Running the mile and marathon are completely different. You don't even recruit the same muscles.

2:55
He will train for a 3hr pace and beat it.
OR
He will get injured training because his running style isn't suited for higher mileage.
Just my guess.
I would like for him to set a course before predicting a time. Even then, I am not going to set a time.
When asked about which marathon, he said Big Sur or another one, not one of the majors.
