I'm sorry that the truth hurts. If you are so valuable then you have plenty of opportunity. If the head coach truly does nothing as you say then shouldn't you desire to move? Maybe you aren't as valuable as you think you are.
Regardless, the situation will fix itself eventually. The head coach that does nothing should be canned for sure. You call me an idiot which likely means you are either not very good at what you do and are sensitive about it or you are just one of those people that complain about everyone else when you may be the problem. By the way, I have not said it is ok to be a lazy head coach.
William and Mary would have to be insane to hire Barreau. That won't happen.
What a plonker. Feeling defensive much?Mate they're calling you an idiot because you failed miserably to address the response of being an underperforming head coach and only responded with -If the assistant doesn't like it then move on. If you are that good then there will be plenty of jobs- blah blah blah. Proper rubbish.-Maybe you arent as valuable as you think you are-. Stop talking out your arse. I'd bet youre the Billy no mates without value to your program.

I agree with the other poster, you're obnoxious and maybe the issue is that what you said did imply that it's ok for the head coach to be lazy. Deal with it or more on if you feel you're more valuable and/or unappreciated. While that may be true, it doesn't discredit someone being right that their head coach is lazy or that they are not be appreciated. What the assistant should do is play the game. Be loyal to the coach but do what he wants to do as long as it doesn't affect his relationship with the head coach. When you learn the game it's he who plays it the best that gets what he/she wants
The non-loyal assistant is going to get canned whether right or wrong 10 times out of 10. Unless we're talking about ethical/illegal issues here. And yes, because loyalty is so important in this profession, that's the way it should be. Not excusing bad head coaches. But the assistant has to let that take care of itself. The assistant's only job description is "Make the Head Coach's Job Easier." Any assistant needs to acknowledge this before signing up. The assistant who gains a reputation for disloyalty won't be in this profession (at least at a high level) long. And If I'm ever head coach, I won't go near an assistant known for disloyalty no matter how good they are. And all this is coming from an assistant who works for a very well know sh!tty head coach.
Too bad for you and more importantly the athletes.
It appears the profession is full of sleazy folks and whats worse is the assistants are expected to support that shit. The coaching will never get better with this system in place. Too bad standing up and having integrity is looked down upon. The good ole boy network thrives.....
Fellas,
let this be the lesson!!!!
This is exactly why underperforming underexperiened women (and some men) are taking so many positions.
Head coaches gotta "Protect this house!"
I wouldn't classify Coach Barreau as an Assistant Coach, He is the Head XC/Distance Coach. A Head XC Coach and Head Track Coach are equals and although they should collaborate with each other they aren't each others supervisors that would mean during Cross Country (Summer/Fall) Barreau is in charge of the track coach and in winter/spring the track coach is in charge of Barreau. Its a broken model, you can't have two head coaches in a program to have cohesion. You have to have a clear division of powers. You can't have a successful cross country program and not be in charge entirely of your distance athletes. It would be different if the Head Track Coach was the Director of XC/Track & Field. I'm not saying a Head XC Coach should be a Head Track Coach, you just need a good model and staff.
Director of Track & Field/ XC
Head XC/Distance
Sprints/ Hurdles
Jumps
Throws
or
Director of Track & Field/ XC
Head Track & Field Coach
Sprints/Hurdles
Jumps
Throws
No Matt, that's not how it works.
I get what you are trying to say but a head t&f coach is never an assistant to a head xc coach. However, a head xc coach is an assistant to the t&f coach during the indoor/outdoor season.
Not the greatest system but it can work.
But back to the jobs.
It's about freaking time!SeattleU wasn't even a competitive DIVISION II program, as across the board in event areas, Seattle Pacific (women), along with Western Washington, and Central Washington would regularly clean their clocks at meets. Now the next question is what type of coach, and what type of direction does SeattleU want to go? Do they want to put more scholarships/travel $/facilities into the team? Do they want to go in the direction of Gonzaga/Portland and just be a distance program? The one coach I do feel bad for is Chad Pharis, who seems to be the the one coach who knew what the hell he was doing given the circumstances, as he was the one who developed their high jumper who graduated last year, and Mandie Maddux, their heptathlete. I hope that they at least keep him for the next school year unless the school decides to go all-in on a distance program.Since they became a D1 school, they have not qualified ONE athlete to the NCAA championships, which is unacceptable.

Granted they're in a crappy conference (the WAC), and that they don't even have a track, but for a D1 school not to qualify anyone for the NCAA regionals is unacceptable...I don't even think that they're the third best college track & field program in the city of Seattle, and there are several D2 schools in Washington that would clean their clocks.
Or is it that their administration doesn't give a rat's ass about the team, & are happy to have a team to maintain D1 status for basketball?
As of now, SeattleU isn't even a decent D2 team.
That program could do better.
IN my opinion the best model is
Director of track and field (throws coach)
Head XC coach
Sprints coach
Jumps coach
What are you basing this on? Success in any major programs? Just wondering

Actually just being a smart ass because the poster left out the possibility of a throws or jumps coach being a Director.
Hey guys this seems like something you should start your own thread about.
