THE REAL VANHOY wrote:
I don't think anybody can argue Vanhoy inherited talent. What people are not giving him credit for is how he coached that talent into being a contender. There are a few big time programs that get a lot of talent every year that struggle to get a top 5 CC finish. What his athletes have done on the track is even more impressive. Question is can he keep it going?
McRaven... give me a break would not know what to do with that talent.
Vanhoy doing the right thing sticking at Ole Miss making good money and getting plenty of support and experience from his fellow coaches.
Check the credentials of those runners he either inherited or poached from other schools. Anyone with a computer and YouTube could have coached those guys: Erb was the #1 runner on a Syracuse team that won the NCAA XC title the year after he left. Engels ran 4:03-8:50+ in high school. Tobin ran 3:45 in high school. Domanic and Gilley both under 8:57 and 4:07 in high school. Daniel Bulmer 3:45 and 14:18. Wes Gallagher 4:02 indoor + 14:02. Ryan Manahan 1:47 and 3:58. Ryan Walling 3:45, 29:06, 14:01.
ALL of this done before stepping one foot on the Univ. of Ole Miss campus.
You do realize that Engels was about to quit when he left N.C. State and hadn't done anything in 2.5 years? And Vanhoy led Domanic to a 3:54 mile this summer as well as dropping Wallings 5k PR 30 seconds to 13:31? Not any coach could do that... Not saying vanhoy is the greatest ever, but you have to produce even when you're given good opportunities
all of these guys had A++ credentials and were ready to break out, regardless of who was the coach at their school. What are their prospects, this year? Who has the coach recruited (from other schools) this year? -
Seriously. Can you guys move all of this VanHoy stuff elsewhere? You guys are truly hijacking this thread with something that is inconsequential to what is actually going on.

This is UMass' own fault, specifically the director who aimed too high in the search for a men's only position with one scholarship invested in distance. Plenty of up and coming coaches would've jumped at this opportunity and done well with it - instead UMass made a massive blunder and interviewed people who were never taking the job and only using it for a raise or leverage in their current job. In this case aiming lower would've been the right thing to do and they could've gotten a very good coach to start the transition now rather than kicking the can further down the road. Hopefully they figure this out before they try to hire again next time.
They never even posted the job on UMass job board...
This all seems pretty standard for UMass. They are (in)famous for finding new and creative ways to f*** things up. -

When will we see announcements from Auburn, W&M, Harvard and Charlotte?? Kids are starting to get to campus now, time to get a move on.
Kids are not arriving at campus yet.
First day of permissible competition is Sept 1; NCAA rules permit practices starting using a formula based on the start of classes.
Still 1-2 weeks away.
Oh yeah... and it's football season!
ADs could care less about XC starting.
DI cross country can start practice 21 practice units from the 1st date of competition. Kids are arriving this weekend. -
auburn hired the samford coach. his top athlete already transferred in.

Man this guy right here is n da know for sure! well you better make sure to let the Samford distance coach know as well. -
She didn't leave Samford when her other two coaches split. Don't think she would leave her senior year. Nice try doe

McGregor is going to Auburn...release coming Monday. This is true.
What's not true is that the top athlete going with.
Transferring as a senior would be dumb. -
Lets hope that Roger Cooke lands someplace good if not at the University of Hartford which is a program in need of alot of help.

I started my career as a director of operations at a power 5 school. Made $36K a year. You're the low man or woman on the totem pole, do all the grunt work, and don't make much money but it's a way to get into the system and network with people.
Know of one SEC DirOps who makes north of $70K. There's may be more who do.
What are you smoking. No director of ops in the SEC makes more than 70k. Could be one or two nationally, all in areas where cost of living is very high, who make that. Would be shocked to even have a single operations person making 70k nationally. -

Nope.
How about contributing something of substance instead of just saying "Nope"?
