I think my post earlier was unclear: I do believe that the individuals responsible for those posts should be punished and condemned. Based on the situation, the school needs to take action against them, and they are right for doing so. The things they said were clearly not OK, and I think everyone realizes this. I can see how my post may seem to suggest that they should not punished. However, I never said there was "nothing wrong" with what was said.
You say that anyone anyone with "strong moral sensibilities" would report this behavior. The implication here is that not a single person on the Amherst team has strong moral character. This is absurd, and again ties back to my original post. How do you have the righteousness to declare the whole team morally bankrupt? Have you ever met this team in person? I doubt it. Have you never made a mean comment about someone? Your post about me seems to suggest not.
This is what my original post was meant to address. No one is morally pure, and the people demonizing this team are way off-base. What they did is wrong, but these are just normal kids, if not even good kids. They're thoughts in what was supposed to be a private conversation does not change this, and the people so eager to throw these young men under the bus need to examine their own actions. I don't know anyone who has earned the moral righteousness to be able declare these young men bad people.
