I was a USATF member for years and involved in several sponsored races.
Now, because of issues like this, I choose to run without a membership.
Those fees to host a championship race are outrageous. No wonder very few clubs want to take on the risk. USATF should be ashamed of themselves.

Bend Oregon is virtually impossible to get to from the east coast.
Yet, 7 USATF national championships of various distances have been there in the past three years.
Tallahassee had a great course, and great organization.
Bend, OR.....nope.
Bend course was awesome. Travel sucked, but such a good XC course. -

Similar number to San Fran for Lehigh between 1700-1800.
For future reference itt is San Francisco or "The City." It is also acceptable to abrieviate to SF.
But never is it San Fran, just like it is not Cali.
Bull shite.......It's Frisco!
True dat. Young crowd does say Frisco. That also is acceptable.
And no one born and raised calls it Cali. -
Tallahassee wasn't so bad IF you knew to look at other airports. Most of my team flew into Jacksonville and drove over; people who flew into Tallahassee had horrible delays and paid 2x as much.

Anyone know where it will be next year?

Guess I should read page 2 before posting. Is this confirmed?
For my money, Bend, OR was the best experience although I enjoyed SF too. I live in the southwest and usually do not travel east for races. -
Yeah, Lexington next year the Spokane the year after.
I thought Tallahassee was great btw. Not quite as easy to get to as some other cities, but overall I really enjoyed my experience there. The course was pretty and spectator friendly, and the weather was great for both spectators and racers. Went down to the Gulf of Mexico the day after the race and got to hike along the ocean in a beautiful wildlife refuge, spotting alligators and all kinds of cool stuff like that. Really loved it there. -
Seems like Florida didn't deter many of the top runners/teams!
-
Ugh Kentucky. Why? Why not Louisville or even the great Terre Haute course?

For what its worth. Last year in San Fran 1752 total runners finished.
Today in Florida 879 finished.
Lets bring it back to the west coast.
Too many gay/tranny democrats on the west coast. -

I agree with you that it was a great experience. I run for a team in the midwest and this was our 3rd year in a row at this race. Compared to SF and Lehigh, this was the best of the three. I would assume numbers were down due to flight costs as many have previously mentioned. I booked about 45 days out and paid $312 flying Delta (DSM>ATL>TLH). I'm guessing the west coast options were more cost prohibitive and with fewer options going into Tallahassee tickets became quite expensive last minute.
Lexington is probably more driveable for many teams north of the Mason-Dixon excluding the northwest. We'll be considering it even with a 9.5 hour drive. -
How much $$$ do you think it would take to host club nats?
1. Prize money: $35-49k?
2. anti doping: $5-10k?
3. Organizing(rentals, facilities, vip, merch...):$25-30k?
4. ~100 committed vols
Total: $90-100k?
If a usatf sanctioned group is able to fund the event to this level does that keep them in the mix? -
Our Greater Boston Track Club had good races and a good time in Tallahassee. Part of that is seeing others like us from other parts of the country. Tallahassee did a great job. It is harder to get to. The course was meticulously maintained. A big pavement roller flattened it before the race especially the miles of crushed oyster shells.
It is fun to go to new places to race on new courses and see old friends. But first places have to bid.
This Club XC Champs is the best thing USATF does. Nowhere else can a club runner start racing at the gun alongside Olympians.
It is the best.
We will be in Lexington and Spokane. We have been there before and they each did a good job. Someplace new would be good....like a desert. Sand dunes. Swamps (without alligators.) Adventure. Mountains. But not many people live in those places—hotels, airports.
The meet, however, is worth every effort.
