Pat Tiernan win's the 2016 Australian 10000m Championships in 27:59 (unofficial) on debut. Closed the final 5km in 13:52 off the front in very windy conditions (5.4 m/s at some stages throughout the night). Oh baby!

The entire nation breathes a collective sigh of relieve that Patrick has committed to stay with his college coach.
Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!
Unbelievably awesome run. He did it pretty much alone, and made it look effortless.
He has therefore achieved something that Che's has not. A sub 28 10000m.
He should get the 27:45 qualifier easily... that was an amazing effort given the solo effort and wind. He truly didn't look tired. Kiwi won the women's race in 32:34(?).. Camille H...? Also a solo effort from 5k (16:04) onwards.

shows you how competitive NCAA XC is that you need to be in sub 28 minutes shape to win! Well done to him.
I think Tiernan will be able to go 27:25 this year
Love me some Pat Tiernan. I hope to see great things from him in the future.
What do ya'll think his best event will be? 10,000M? Marathon?

That's been the case for a long time. I think in a good year you need to be in low-27 shape to win.
Popular win down under, or perhaps, popular loss is more apt

Clearly he was talking about Che's Lounge in Tucson.

Unless he changes his mind, he is not chasing the qualifier and will be trying for the 5000 only in London

My comment was based on his trackside post race interview. He was asked about " getting the standard" and replied he would be trying for it. It is possible he interpreted "the standard" as being 5,000. Perhaps that race alone made him rethink it. Regardless, it was a good indicator of a great future.

I've heard a lot of ridiculous times people have said athletes could run on letsrun, but I think 27:25 is very doable for him. Chris Derrick ran 27:31 his senior year, yet never won an NCAA title or made an Olympic team and Tiernan has already done both (granted it's harder to make a US Olympic team). I think 27:20s is for sure possible. Hopefully Payton Jordan!
