Can someone explain to me how Galen had an allergy attack?
That's why he was wearing his mask. It's New Hampshire in November. The pollen and allergy count is practically non-existent.

Worn down.
Old man with too many miles.
New testing catches more fish.
Fresh ice hats not available--Salazar banned from course. -
I think you got the wrong Manchester

Manchester England: Cloudy with a chance of periodontal rot. -
RIght Manchester is even worse. Pollen Levels are at the absolute lowest measurable.
" There will be no pollen generated locally until the early spring trees begin to pollinate. "
https://www.pollen.com/forecast/current/pollen/6040 -
It wasn't for the pollen. It was for the cold, dry air. Cold, air can dry out the lungs and produce asthmatic symptoms...he has asthma..he wore it to help keep the air he breaths in through his mouth a bit warmer to help diminish asthmatic symptoms.
Not always for the pollen! This also explains why he doesn't ever really race on the east coast where it is cold more often than the west coast. This one just happened to fall in line with his training cycle. -

And you know all this, how?
FYI #1: East Coast cold weather is not dry. Same humidity levels as Portland, Oregon
FYI #2: Manchester, Connecticut temps were 40ish. Portland, Oregon was 40ish.
FYI #3: Rupp live in ....? -

Because the quote of the day yesterday referenced the cold air being a problem. -

What you didn't get: Rupp has lived his entire life in a cold air climate. If he is having cold air issue then he has a significant problem. Rupp has run in the snow in the past. Something health-wise has changed. -
The mask was for Asthma, not Allergy. It warmed the air going into his lungs. For some people, cold air can trigger asthma.
-
For somebody who has abused TUEs for performance gains, there will be a health price to pay.
This will not be the first.
See AlSal. -
Running in cold climate is different than racing in it. You need a significant more amount of oxygen going in to your system running a race than even a workout or training run.
Plus, who is to say he doesn't wear it during workouts in Oregon?

Who says he wears a mask when training? You.
He seriously needs to think about moving during the winter to a more agreeable climate area. As people age they make adjustment to deal with reality. Such as winter becomes a building phase with no racing. Nothing new here except to you it seems. -
What about the hills in Central Park? New York may not be Galen's stomping ground on the biggest day of the year.

This isn't a made up excuse. Salazar was talking about it before the race. He doesn't do well in the cold.
http://www.courant.com/manchester-road-race/hc-galen-rupp-manchester-road-race-1123-20161122-story.html
"I think he's very capable of (the course record)," Salazar said of the record. "He should be able to run considerably faster than it. But in cold weather, [sometimes] he has a bad reaction where he has severe breathing problems. We brought him some masks to wear but that cuts down on your breathing.
"Sometimes just trying to run a little too fast puts you over the edge. If it was a warm day and other athletes were pushing, I think he could run underneath that record. So as a result, I'm going to tell him, 'Go out and try to win the race. If it's going well and you're feeling good, go for it at the end. But not from the beginning.' He hasn't dropped out from asthma for a couple years in a race but I don't want it to start [Thursday]." -

He did make an adjustment. He wore a mask. -

Same Rupp hate per usual. Who cares about a turkey trot? Let's talk in the spring

Just like Norwegian XC skiers dealing with cold weather by dubious means.
