There have been a handful of guys over the last 5 years that have moved up in distance from the road and track and done well. This is not anything new. A lot of times the best guys have more stellar cross country credentials and experience with road marathons. Jim ran a 1:08 out of college and was 42nd at USATF 12km cross country last time he raced shorter distances in 2015.What is new is how much Jim is shattering records by this year and how much he has improved in longer ultras over the past 10 months. He is simply unstoppable and at a totally different level compared to any one else on the scene. Max King's record was fairly stout at JFK and of course we all know he is an established 2:14 marathoner who was 12th at the Olympic Trials this year. Jim just shattered that record and improved his own PB on the course by 26 minutes. Of course he's raced there two times prior to this year so he had that advantage, but he barely won last year by 2 minutes in 5:47. Now he runs 5:21 and nobody is even close.

When fast runners at shorter distances start running ultras...the slower ultra runners should get real worried.
Jim Walmsley also broke the previous fastest known time for the 21 mile single rim to rim Grand Canyon and the FKT 42 mile Grand Canyon double rim to rim to rim on the same day.
The previous records were both held by Jim Walmsley's neighbor (Rob Krar).
I am sorry about that Rob.
