Yep, i said it. Talent is not important as most people think it is.
I did not break 6 minutes on my first timed mile as a freshman in high school. Judging by the people who posted, i am a runner with 'no talent'. I posted on Letsrun in High School, saying that i have big dreams and guess what, i got turned down hard. (Not sure if that thread got deleted or not, but i can't find it). I've came across many nature vs nurture debates and i am positively SHOCKED by the amount of negativity on this site. Everyone is like:' talent accounts to 99% of performance.'
I am now upping my mileage to 130 mpw, and looking forward to break 2:20 for the marathon. If i stay consistent for the next few years i believe i have the chance to go sub 2:15. People is going to be like: ' oh, you run 130 mpw consistently, you have talent!' NO, i built up my mileage gradually, i sleep as much as i can, i eat as healthy as i can, and that's how. No shortcuts, and little things matters.
So i am thinking that talent is actually not as important as most people think it is. Are you born shaped a runner? If you are, you have the capability to become a world class runner. Yeah, i started this thread and i know there are a lot of people who disagree, but to the young guys who have big dreams, go with it, ignore the haters, and you just might find yourself among the stars.
