Why do Americans call it a marathawn ?
Why do Americans call it a marathawn ?
because that's what its actually called. "Marefen" isn't even close.
Not shocked though the Average IQ in Britain is a great deal lower than Americans.
It's all explained here, it's a long or a lot of 'fen' and it's American in its etiology:

Why do Britexits use the word 'ghastly'?

I'm a bit surprised that no one has discussed the socioeconomic class distinctions associated with so-called "th-fronting":
Isn't that the cockney accent?
In New Zealand the Maori words with, 'wh' is actually said 'ph' so a major skifield Whakapapa sounds rather amusing but I'm pretty sure they say "marry-thin."

Ghastly is so Southern English. But when they appear before Parliament the word 'ghostly' will be more appropriate.
The name "Marathon" (ΜαÏαθών) comes from the herb fennel, called marathon (μάÏαθον) or marathos (μάÏαθος) in Ancient Greek, so Marathon literally means "a place full of fennels".
Many well-spoken Brits can say "Marathon". Exceptions are teenagers, and anyone from Sarf Lunnon and Norf Lunnon
