Working on it, angryjohnny...i guess the only thing holding me back on the Daniels book is that some of the reviews say that the science of it is rather obscure and overly technical.
If you're even wlightly familiar with the types of workouts in running and extremely basic physiology, it's a pretty easy read and the tone is fairly conversational. You can get a used copy real cheap and it'll take 5-10 hours to read. What's the risk, really?
