Thoughts? When i tried to run a sub 2:20 I built up to 140-150 mpw range from 110 mpw and i found out that my consistency is horrible as i need to take one down week after 2 normal weeks. My quality workouts are not very quality at all and a 7 miler@HM pace feels like an all out performance - when it should be actually 85-90% heart rate, threshold effort.
I had enough and dropped down to 120 mile weeks and it feels GOOD. I stayed very consistent with my mileage and tempos felt moderate but relaxed. After three months of 120mpw base i sharpened and run a massive PR, dipping below 2:19!! I felt that if i stayed injury-free and consistent at 120 mpw for the next two or three years i could break 2:15, which would be a massive achievement for me, and possibly could get me to an qualify for OT.
So the question is, have anyone done beyond 120 mpw and stayed consistent? Do you think that there's a benefit in doing so and what are your PR improvement after the high mileage weeks? The point of me asking is that are there additional benefits going beyond 120 mpw because i will maybe try again next year. Maybe i couldn't do high mileage because i am untalented? (I barely broke 25 for 5K in my freshman high school year)
