Hi Letsrun,
Rank these times from the easiest to hardest, based on how many people did it and how hard it is to achieve the time.
1:55 800m
3:45 1500m
8:00 3000m
14:00 5000m
29:00 10000m
1:05 Half M
2:15 M
Obviously it's going to take more time of training to run a 2:15 Marathon than a 1:55 800m, but less people are genetically capable of a 1:55, so take both components into thought (aerobic base time and genetic capability)
Discuss.
Which times are harder

Already in correct order

Interested to know as well. Are you trying to run these times?
-
Really?? you think LESS people can run a 1:55 then a 2:15 marathon.. More high school kids can run a 1:55 than adults can break 2:15, wtf
-
lol no i am far from it :)
-
1:55 isn't a fast time compared to the rest maybe you meant 1:48-1:50
-
1:55 is far and away the easiest.
The rest look like they are more or less pulled from an equivalency table. -
Ok thanks for the input guys.
As a distance runner i tend to overestimate the difficulty of shorter events -
1:55 is by far the easiest. I think the list is in pretty good order from easiest to hardest the way you posted it.
-
On a related note I was thinking of using IAAF points tables to compare performances between events. Anyone does this before? Is it generally accurate?
-
They are all approximately women WRs. But the longer events require more training, so fewer men beat those times than the shorter ones like 800 and mile.

Very true.
However, most 1:55 800 guys were just born with the ability to do 1:55 with SOME training and many if not most distance runners will never touch 155 no matter what training they do.
Conversely, the further the distance, the more that hard work and training contributes to ability to hit those times presented. (Still need genetics to hit 2:15 though!) -
Dont you think the HM is a little easier than the rest (besides the 800)? Just a little
-
Yep well said.

For reference, let's look at the women's WR's compared to these. If we look at the percentages we see clearly that the order from easiest to hardest is as follows:
1:55 800m - 1:53.2 - 98.43%
1:05 Half M - 1:05:09 - 100.23%
2:15 Full M - 2:15:25 - 100.31%
29:00 10000m - 29:17.45 - 101%
14:00 5000m - 14:11.15 - 101.33%
3:45 1500m - 3:50.07 - 102.25%
8:00 3000m - 8:20.68 - 104.31% -

Yes, because comparing to a load of dodgy records is such a great idea!
I'd say the 3000 and 5000 times are the most difficult. -
Listing that 800m time next to those other times is an insult to anyone who has run anything close to them.
There is an argument for putting a 2:20 marathon and a 1:50 800m in the same ballpark, but trying to compare 800m times and marathon times too closely makes us all sound pretty dumb. -

I'm pretty sure that not that many people could run a 1:55 800, immediately followed by a 2:15 marathon. -
Easy to hard
1:55 - 3:45 - 8:00 - 29:00 - 14:00 - 1:05 - 2:15
