Sure she set a new record for a new course. The low altitude schools complained about that last big hill so CHSAA revised the course.

Maybe you're not grasping this, Oakley set a NEW course record on THE same course that Rainsberger had set her own record on last year.
So, Oakley broke Rainsberger's course record by 30 seconds as this was the SECOND year for the NEW configuration.
Shayla and Shelby are the hottest Houlihans since HotLips on M*A*S*H
Don't forget her 15:53 3 mile at Woodbridge this season. She only did soccer until junior year before trying xc/track. Could probably go top 5 at NCAAs right now.
Would be nice to see her do FL and challenge
records but most of CO xc goes to NXNSW.
Oakley @ 15:53, 3 mile & Colter @ 2:04, 800 are two CO athletes CU let slip away. ----Still has no bearing on Wetmore's continuing success though
You just answered your own question.
No... you are not grasping this. They configured the new course so the lower altitude schools had a fighting chance. It is the same course minus the big hill from last years race... which counts for 30 seconds less.
Just to add an exclamation point as to how impressive this performance was: Oakley's race was at noon on an unseasonably hot day. It got up to 81 degrees - more than 20 degrees warmer than the average for the date and at least 15 degrees warmer than last year.
You are not grasping this Critic 100. The new configuration began last year - 2015. Every time you post otherwise you emphasize your complete and utter ignorance. Nobody ran over Big Willis last year at Colorado State Meet. And who are the "lower altitude schools" in Colorado? Last I checked, Front Range schools and athletes were winning most of the state titles at the 4A and 5A divisions - all at those "low altitudes" of 5000 - 6500ft.

Again, the "new" configuration began for the 2015 state meet. This was the SECOND year with the new configuration that DOES NOT include Big Willis!!

Big Willis wrote:That being said, gotta give Cal credit as she did take a visit to CU and still chose Cal. Cal has been tremendous in recruiting lately as they have landed some of the top females in the country recently in Bethyn Knights, Jordyn Colter, Stephanie Jenks, and now Oakley.
Their recruiter must be doing something right. Probably doesn't hurt he is from Colorado & still well connected here. Grandview HS is in a suburb of Denver...closer to Boulder than the Springs BTW...
Yes, Cal's recruiter is a Smoky Hill (Brent Vaughn, the Kaltenbach's, Ryan Deak, Keara (Sammons) Rupp, etc) grad, which is in the same school district and same conference as Grandview. It's also in the same district and conference as Cherry Creek, where Jordyn Colter went to school. So, you're correct - he's still quite well connected here.
By the way Smoky Proud, I'm sure we must know each other.
I ran in 2014, 2015 and 2016. 2014 big hill. 2015 and 2016 no big hill. 2015=2016.
30 seconds faster than Katie Rainsberger's record last year on a very hot day is unbelievable.
I will not be surprised at all if Oakley gets some records on the track this outdoor season. She is certainly in a league with Cain and Efraimson as high school standouts, and in my opinion has a higher ceiling. I guess we will have to wait and see but 17:07 on this course with the heat is ridiculous!
Furthermore, she destroyed Lauren Gregory by nearly 90 seconds, and all of that advantage was gained over the last 1.3 miles when Gregory literally bonked from trying to stay with Oakley.
Gregory came in as the 3 time defending state champion and is a two time Footlocker Finalist and has run around 4:40 and 10:20.
Granted Gregory was injured all of last track season and didn't have much of a summer build up, apparently.
I don't think people on the national level quite yet realize just how damn good Brie Oakley is!!
Apparently there's a little more to the Gregory vs. Oakley story. This is from the discussion forum on the Colorado MileSplit site.

As most everyone knows, a great anticipation of the State Meet was Lauren vs. Brie in 5A girls. What very few observed, and most were/are? not aware, is what happened during the race. At approximately 200m before the 2-mile mark, running side-by-side and both looking great, Lauren instantaneously darted off into the bushes on the side of the course; apparently to go to the bathroom. Approximately 2 minutes later, just ahead of the 3rd place runner, she reappeared from the bushes, and rejoined the race. And to my knowledge, the class act that she is, Lauren never mentioned it or used it as an excuse after the race.
The new course, starting last year (2015) and run again this year, is quite a bit different than the one that was used the first three years. The new configuration not only took out Big Willis, the big hill about half way into the race, the start was also moved up to the level of the finish, and the bridge/creek crossing now happens after 1K, instead of less than 400 meters into the race. The previous course started at one of the lowest parts of the available area and finished a good 40 or 50 feet higher. The course is still very challenging, but it's a bit more subtle than the one from 2012, 2013 and 2014. The heat and dust this year was a factor for all but the first race or two.
Check out this finish from the 3A girls race (2nd race of the day) if you haven't already seen it. These are two of the top girls in the state behind Oakley and Gregory. Young competed at Footlocker last year when Gregory got hurt, and McConnell won last year as a freshman and was undefeated in Colorado this year, and had defeated Young early in the season. McConnell ran 17:12 for 2nd place at the Desert Twilight X-Ctry Festival in Arizona in September.
Who ran well for the boys, and what's the boys' record for the new course?

I know for a fact that Lauren didn't run off into the woods to pee, as I know a coach who was there when it happened.
She had just surged to catch up to, and slightly pass, Oakley. They were hammering! Had gone out in 5:15 the first mile!! At that point Gregory hit the wall and fell into the bushes. The coach I know ran over to her and asked if she was okay? She responded, "I can't feel my legs! I cant see anything!" She laid for a little while before getting up and proceeding back onto the course to still finish second.
It happened on the farthest outreaches of the course, and not many people witnessed it. Some did however, and a few were talking about it.
Lauren is very classy and wouldn't use it as a excuse. In fact, in her post-race interview she just said that, "She (Oakley) took it to me."

I have coached & recruited for a long time against Cal and know that Houlihan is indeed coaching those kids, for the most part, in XC. Sandoval is more of a figure head these days during the fall. Come track, Sandoval takes the mid d group, Houlihan takes the steeple on up, and Davis assists them. I recruit a lot of the same kids...and it sounds like they have very little interaction with Houlihan & Sandoval in that process except for the official visit. The program, all in all, does seem healthier these days in a lot of respects. Wish nothing but the best for them & Oakley...they clearly did their homework & are getting a pretty special young lady.
