This whole debate is so wrong-headed, it is hard to believe.
Here are two key paragraphs from that article:
"11.1 million Immigrants in the U.S. in 2014, a total unchanged from 2009 and accounting for 3.5% of the nation’s population. The number of unauthorized immigrants peaked in 2007 at 12.2 million, when this group was 4% of the U.S. population.
2Mexicans made up 52% of all unauthorized immigrants in 2014, though their numbers had been declining in recent years. There were 5.8 million Mexican unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. that year, down from 6.4 million in 2009, according to the new Pew Research Center estimates."
In other words, while the Republican claim is that illegal immigrants, especially from Mexico, are entering this country in enormous numbers and committing large numbers of crimes, the facts are that there are about 1 million fewer illegal immigrants than under W. in 2007 (12.2 million, an all-time high), that the number of illegal immigrants from Mexico is down by 600,000 under Obama, that the # of illegal immigrants deported under Obama was vastly greater than under any other president, and, from other sources, that illegal immigrants and immigrants in general commit fewer crimes than the native-born population.
