I was reading how Cheserek is trying to make history this week.

"Only two other men have come close to achieving this feat – Oregon’s Steve Prefontaine (1970, 1971, 1973) and Washington State’s Henry Rono (1976, 1978, 1979)."
Does anyone know who beat Pre and Rono?
Henry Rono and Steve Prefontaine only won 3 Pac-10 xc titles, who beat them?

Didn't Gerry Lindgren beat Pre at Pac-10's?
I think Rono only ran three (3). -

Neil Cusack won in 1972.
I don't think Pre ran that year.
I think Lindgren's last year was 69? -

In 69, some little dude named Lindgren won...
In ’77, some Kenyan named Joeleruiyot won as he had the same time as Rono... 29:35... Salazar was second at 29:47!.... -

So when did Cusack transfer from East Tennessee State U. (ETSU) into the Pac 8?
Rojo, Pre never won a Pac 10. -
Lindgren beat frosh Pre in that classic 1969 photo-less finish.
Rono finished a step behind teammate Cheruiyot in '77, so he's basically a 4-time champ.

Gerry Lindgren beat Steve at the 1969 Pac 8 XC championships. It was a close finish.

Looks like Pre had him in the lean. Pre had a bigger chest than the wimpy guy in the glasses (gerry).

This full body photo makes it pretty obvious that 18 year old Pre got there before 23 year old Lindgren.

All politics that they gave it to Lindgren. It was his SR year.
-
Looks like it should have been a DQ on Pre.
Is it too late to file an appeal? -

Not the angle needed to determine who won -

Phil won't allow it. -
The newspaper item doesn't mention it but in the Pre biography I think it says they purposely tried to tie. Why the officials didn't just let it stand as a tie, who knows.
-
Pre was busy pouring beers at 'The Pad' in '72 after Munich

I think in Rono's '76 championship race, he finished side by side with a teammate. I always thought Rono had 4. How do championships handle teammates who finish together.
