50k seems to be the bare minimum college educated adults should earn.

It totally depends on where you live.
I can say that in San Diego, without welfare, $50k for an adult is pushing minimum wage for college grads (non-Barista work). I'd say $40k is minimum.
The average cost of a house here is $500k. $50k salary doesn't get you far.
$50k/yr puts in a pretty comfortable place in most small towns.
Boston - this was 10 years ago but my 1st job out of college was in financial services and I made $33k - I went to a 4 year college in the region that is very well known.
Federal min. wage btw is $15,080 a year.

What's your salary now?
There are many college grads that cannot find work. Many others that have found work but settled for very little. People who have an average or above average salary are more likely to openly speak about it, causing the perceived average to be skewed. $50k is considered good in most of the US and even decent in many cities.
$130k

You can live just fine on $50K in San Diego. It just means you won't be owning anything and will likely have roommmates. 50K is more than enough to pay rent, bills and still have money to party every weekend.

I agree. If you are single with no kids and aren't looking to buy a home then you can be ok.
I don't pay rent but the units around here (Downtown) for just under $2k a month which would destroy a $50k salary.

SPOT ON! critical thinking realist. I like your style. It's the truth though most people who boast are doing pretty well or fabricating their salaries to troll, the rest of the majority are just trying to get by.
Like others said it depends where you live. Without kids, you can have a very nice life on $50k here in Ohio.
No its actually the median wage in this country. Which means the minimum wage is much lower.
It depends where you live. Yes if I would agree 50k a year is the minimum household salary for a family with 2 kids where I live and I know people that get by on that. And they can do it without any government assistance. But I doubt that is enough to save and invest.
Um, ever been to Appalachia?
Hi jamin!
No. Minimum wage is minimum wage for adults. And there are adults who, regardless of motivation, don't come from circumstances that allow them to make more than that. 50k a year, while modest for a privileged few, is an absolute dream compared to what most people can have and should not be scoffed at.

Your definition of "just fine" ends pretty swiftly after the second roommate drama episode.

Know how I know you're a douchebag?

The median household income is $55k that includes both single and two income households.

Unless you make $100k a year you are a poor peasant and not worth my time.
