Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Georgia = lazy, willfully ignorant, hyper-religious, shortest life expectancy, hot and humid weather and ALL of the girls who were cute in HS end up 250 pounds with 4-5 kids before they reach 26. Even ones who get college degrees ( yes the southern college girls are good looking) have about 3-4 years before they are obese baby mamas. At least Arkansas has some nice mountains in the northwest part.
The south may be miserable but at least there is some culture, even if the culture is nothing to be proud of. The midwest- Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Nebraska, literally just fields and dirt, no historical culture, no natural scenery, flat and boring, but the people are just as Red State-ish as the southeast. I'd actually rank these states below the southeast, because the southeast at least has coastline and culture.
I've never been to the north, northwest, northeast, the west coast, or east coast, but they have to be better than the south and midwest.

It would have to Ill ID OH... those horrible mid western states that are dying.. rust belt, crap weather, nothing interesting at all...
I do have a very strong feeling that it's a Midwest state.
Side topic - I wonder what the future holds for the Midwest. It's hard for me to envision a real resurgence in industry there or a major increase in population. And I think the wage gap will only continue to grow in our country as a whole.
Could a mass exodus of people be possible in the near future from states like Iowa or Nebraska for more prosperous and less miserable states? Or will they just "go down with the ship" as they say?
Born in the USA, according to Bruce, it's pretty good everywhere
How about most depressed city?
Gary, Indiana has got to be the biggest hell hole I have ever seen. I'd rather live in Chernobyl with an AIDS infected wife.

Damn that list is very surprising to me. I have found several of those states to be incredibly likable.
I'm not surprised by it. People love to rip on the South, but when I lived there I noticed that people were surprisingly happy & content.
I lived & traveled out west in the mountains also & noticed the opposite. Lots of transplants who left family & friends behind in the east coast/mid west for the mountains, fresh air, & active lifestyle. Very physically fit & good looking individuals, but empty & depressed on the inside. Spend all their time hiking, skiing, & exercising to mask their depression. It's probably the same story in the eastern states on the list like New Hampshire & Rhode Island.
Lots of Illinois hate... I'd say the vast majority of people who live in Illinois enjoy it - especially those closer to Chicago.
I agree with your comments about southern folks. It is very true that the south is backwards in many idealogical ways, and has major things on which they can improve.
However, having spent my first 25 years there, never did the population strike me as being "depressed." And that is one thing that I miss. By and large, the people are legitimately friendly, and generally are just thankful for what they have.
My list:
1. Mississippi
2. Alabama
3. Arkansas
4. Louisiana
5. Georgia and South Carolina's rural areas
6. The redneck sections of Florida (Daytona race car redneck types,Jacksonville, etc.)
7. Rural Maine and the paper mills and factories from the early 1900s up there. I helped audit one with a consulting firm and wow what a depressing shit area it is up there. Rural, poor and zero degrees fareignheit without wind chill along the shit shore
8. Rural Texas and Oklahoma oil rig areas and meatpacking plants, Southeastern Colorado (La Junta, Las Animas, etc.)
9. Southeastern Utah hunting areas
10. Nebraska & Kansas at random towns along the highway- windy as Fck on highways, watch truck trailers nearly fall over
ALSO the Midwest e.g. St. Louis Missouri aka Misery, Indiana/Ohio/Iowa Trump blue collar country bumpkins
Honorable mention: luv2run in Colorado Springs
Dude, if you get depressed in Montana, Wyoming, or Alaska, you're not doing it right. Get out and enjoy the greatness of the outdoors. Those are great states.
Louisiana and Mississippi are the most depressing, hands down. Poor economy. Outdoors is flat and not scenic. The weather is humid 9 months of the year. The water and beaches are awful. You're a loooooooooong drive to any place worth visiting.

Haha!! Agree with pretty much all of that. I never mentioned Louisiana simply because New Orleans is somewhat of an iconic city. However, without the existence of NO, I would imagine Louisiana would easily be the most miserable state.

Top 3 states by suicide:
1) Wyoming
2) Alaska
3) Montana
The mountains aren't everything, my dude. I'm a climber, so please believe I love the mountains. But there are so many other factors when determining quality of life in a particular locale. Every day life is tough in these places.

Pretty much my thoughts. I don't need a big city to be happy. Give me some unspoiled wide open areas. That's where I'm happiest.

New Orleans is nice to visit, but a horrible place to live. Lots of poverty. Lots of crime. Lots of violent crime. Roads are abyssmal. No good neighborhoods. Weather is miserable.
Oklahoma is great if you like Wrestling. Hall of Fame is in Stillwater, Oklahoma State always has good teams, (34 NCAA titles) also very nice people, everyone invites you to Church. I liked it.

Dude you're not thinking about the people THAT ACTUALLY LIVE HERE. These states are not made up of transplants who came to explore all the natural beauty. 99% of the populations of those 3 states in particular live every single day of their lives surrounded by terrible wages, dead industries, alcoholism, drug addiction, etc. They are not out frolicking in the meadows, man.

It's definitely not Illinois (only because of Chicago). KS is the answer for the midwest. It's got the downsides of several of the other nearby states, but they've gone totally bonkers there and entirely given their government to the tea party types with predicable results.

Nope, I have friends and family that live in those states who are perfectly happy. I too am happy when I visit them as often as occasion permits.
I'm not sure why you made up that 99% number, but it's way off.
Gotta think OK tops the list. Oppressively hot & humid in summer, bone-chillingly cold w/ice storms in winter, basically flat w/no real natural attractions, F5 tornadoes, rattlesnakes and copperheads, black widows and brown recluses, and, now, ever-growing earthquakes. No major sports, etc. I suppose it has a better economy than some of the others, but who would want to live there?

K, you're right man. We'll just go ahead and use your N=1 experience over the empirical data I posted like 3 posts before yours which you conveniently chose to ignore.
