Yes. Environment is a big part of being healthy and energetic, even the dirt and grime we can't see. Get the f out.

I don't think you need a subleaser. In most states large rats would constitute a breach of contract between yourself and the landlord (unless they told you ahead of time there are large rats) so you can just bail. If they have problem they can see you in court. Just give them a 30 day notice that you will be moving out and that should solve the problem because it gives them enough time to find new tenants. And if they try to make you pay more money, again tell them to see you in court if they want the money. Bring pictures of the filthy apartment and rats and evidence you gave them a 30 day notice and the courts will rule in your favor. I'm not sure how your roommates feel but I would think they don't want to live with rats...

I don't know if rats hurt running. Breathing in feces can be a health problem though.

Do I need to give a thirty day notice? I would like out ASAP. Also, I'm tired of my roommates, and getting them on board with me would definitely slow me down.

Could the landlord claim the tenants are the cause of the filthy environment? It must have been in relatively decent shape when they signed the lease.

It's not filthy. I clean it well. My roommates are a little bit messy, but I clean up after them.

Believe it or not, construction nearby is common to rats moving to another place where they are not feeling threatened. I lived in the city, NYC, and it was always talked about, that when a building had loud construction near, someone was always saying they suddenly had rat problems.

Get a cat. Problem solved. Cats are a great rodent deterrent. But you do seem to have a good cause to tell the landlord to F off.

Laws may require you to give them a chance to remedy but that will vary by state etc.

the dirty carpet is the worst thing you are dealing with since it is harboring all sorts of nasty dirt you are breathing. Document the rat infestation and get out asap.

Like any vermin, the rats wouldn't be there if you weren't feeding them.

Same thing happened to me in college. I was sick all of the time.

Construction next door drove all of the rodents into our building, which was dirt cheap for where I lived.

Rats are cool animals, you call them disgusting and diseased as if you are better than them but then you want to kill them. That makes you the oppressor and the oppressor is never better than the oppressed, you are a bad man.
