New England sucks that's why
Hmmm interesting. Out of the list of states people are moving out of, I can definitely see why. Having spend time in pretty much all of those, they absolutely suck, except for Massachusetts and New York (NYC).
In the list of states people are moving to, I was a little surprised. A lot of those states suck as well, aside from Oregon, Washington, and Vermont. What's funny though is people think of Oregon/Washington/Northern California as these progressive and intellectual beacons, but once you get outside of Portland/Seattle/SF, you will see just how broken down these states can look.
The economic downturn played a big part in rural Pacific Northwest, both in the mountains and on the coast. And I don't think a lot of people realize that. Many parts of that region, while beautiful, looked every bit as beaten down and hopeless as the worst cases in the Appalachian region.
Yes were beaten down and redneck out here . Please every one take caution moving up here to the pnw

You are, and you know exactly what I'm talking about. Drugs and homelessness people have devastates the coastal and mountain towns of the PNW. I lived there for years and it was sad to see, and I'm originally from the deep South, so that's saying something.
Portland and Seattle are neat cities, but very forgettable. More like big towns.
Take that stupid CAians who said the high tax rate will make everyone move out.
It's a thing called Boomer retirement.

No because I am an obese turd. I look like what happens if you take too many iron supplements.
As a MA resident I really wish people would leave. I think in the Boston area it's the opposite. So many f*cking people everywhere. Traffic has become a nightmare in the last 5 years or so.

Nothing new or unique. There's heavy traffic congestion in NY/NJ/CT, Seattle, Chicago, Houston, San Jose, Atlanta, Philly, LA, SF. And DC/VA/MD is just plain hideous.
Retirement is a big driver, but also the post-2008 financial sector job market is also an issue. A lot of people with fancy degrees expecting to walk into high paying corporate and finance jobs in the East are finding that the jobs are scarce and cost of living is so high that it is not worth it if they can get a job. Instead, many are opting to head to the south or sunbelt where they will make less but have a much lower cost of living.

Boston/NYC area are growing. It is the population in the rest of the states that are shrinking.
http://www.businessinsider.com/census-bureau-county-domestic-migration-map-2016-3shows things on a bit more granular level. note the data is dated. People aren't moving to North Dakota anymore.
The population change ones are also a bit different:

First wave Boomers realizing their real estate wealth as they leave the work force and head to more temperate climates & slower paced lifestyles.
of course there are other reasons people move but retiree relocation will be a big part of population repositioning as the Boomers retire.
