What happened? Anyone know? Hard not to cheer for this guy.

I've heard that running a substantially slower pace than what one has trained for can be like running regular 87 in a ferrari. A platitude I know, but my hypothesis is that maybe he became demoralized over the final 10k, but that's inconsistent with his record of always running his best. Maybe he just had a bad race. Definitely pulling for Luke in future races.
You can't run a fast marathon on singles.

Maybe time to re-retire

Huh? Because of one race?
Same stuff every week for build.
"Monday: long warmup, track workout — either 12 x 1k at 2:40-2:45 with 1-minute recovery or 8 x mile at 4:25 with 2-minute recovery
Tuesday: hilly 22-mile run
Wednesday: 13 miles easy and strides
Thursday: 40-minute warmup, 90-minute hilly fartlek, 10-minute cooldown. Approximately 23 miles total.
Friday: 13 miles easy and strides
Saturday: long run, 24-28 miles with the last part close to marathon pace
Sunday: 13 miles easy
That’s 130 miles a week in singles."
Mile repeats, fartlek and a bit of M pace - not specific. No altitude?
Where's the Canova " fast long runs ". Where's the Ryan Hall " long tempos at altitude "

He never looked comfortable out there. Running uneven splits etc. Half way though, you pretty much new it was going to happen . Not a super graceful guy either. Tough road to get to the top
Canova didn't invent no-jog long runs -- he was 40-50 years too late at least.
But you are right, pretty much no specificity in Puskedra's schedule; The 12x km
or mile is excellent. A lot to ask for one workout.
Bad idea to hammer Puskedra at altitude on roads.
Doubling off the bike is not the same experience as doubling off miles but at least
he was thinking about it when he made that call.
Somewhere I read he had a surgery in spring... So don't be too harsh on him. He will went all-in and faded. Stuff like that happens in a marathon. He will be fine if he works on with a mentality like he's shown in the last year.
His PR would have won it. I wonder how much he was paid?

Looks like overtraining.
Slower 20k than last year prior to Chicago is one indicator, little recovery after big workouts each week is another ... that is a lot of overloading crammed into 8 weeks. Who knows, could also be stress from all he's gone through this year.
Wish him and his family well.
New Haven 20k

10 4 Luke Puskedra Eugene 1 M20-29 1:00:14 30:19 1:00:14 4:51
12.4 @ 4:51 was a race; yet 8 @ 4:25/2 min rec. every week was a workout
Yes, best wishes to him and his family.
And to figuring it out how to put it together.
He trained for Chicago during probably one of the worst periods of his life because of his daughter's illness.
You guys need to cut the man some slack. Just last February he placed 4th at the US Trials so it's not like he's done. Bad days out there happen to everyone and if you don't know this you're either not a runner or full of shit.

Who knows, if I had to guess maybe just over trained a bit. Maybe go back to lower miles and less intensity like he did prior to chicago last time.
Well, he had to half prepare for Olympic Marathon as alternate, then quickly switch gears for Chicago- certainly not an ideal build-up.

How many people could run 2:20 off that type of spring and summer?

I couldn't agree more. Aside from injury or illness, nothing will slow you down faster than stress.
his track workouts look like 10k-half marathon training. For the marathon you want to get used to running marathon pace, right?
