Not average but like JohnQP suggested, you don't have to overtake anyone when you run a time trial by yourself. 1.44 in training gets you 1.46 in race at best.
Yep, sure!
Everybody knows that middle distance runners run their PRs during workouts. What the heck, Rudisha was breaking 1:40 every other day before the 2012 olympics.
Wouldn't go that far but 1.44 in training is not what you guys are making it out to be. Have to agree JohnQP, 1.44 in training gets you 1.46 at best in the race.

There's an old guy who walks around my local track with a walker. In lane 1.

You mad bro?
You don't think 1:44 in training is good but that was part of a longer workout with just about everything at 52s/400m and he then ran 2:13.08, something like 4th best of all-time. But you don't think this indicates much of anything? And this guy just completed one of the finer middle distance performances at the Olympics with silver in both 800m and 1500m.

Makh was running the 800 without other runners there cutting him off or providing obstacles to get around. Most world class 800 guys can crank out a 1:44 or so like this during the season if they had to.
Makhloufi is doped to the gills. Who knows, maybe Centro is too but I was so happy he held him off at the Olympics.

You guys have to see this video. Mak Daddy doing some crazy heavy weight squats. I can't even guess how many pounds that is. I guess there is a benefit of doing 1/7 squats. Thats not even a quarter squat but again the weight is crazy. Galen Rupp had 2 45lbs on each side.
He uses partial squat up to 485.
Even just standing with that weight is one of the best exercises for building core strength.
I was definitely one of the skeptics when Makhloufi took gold on 2012. I still am, a bit. But until there is reason to believe otherwise, I've gotta admit--he's the man. This is a balls to the wall workout, and it is pretty cool that he had it videotaped. I agree that 1.44 in these conditions, without traffic, is probably not worth a 1.44 in competition--but he's gone 1.42, so what difference does it make?
In fact, the only thing I wonder about when I watch a video from an elite guy like this is--is this a situation of leaving too much on the track? This is some seriously high-intensity stuff, and there are times when I wonder if approaching race-pace effort in practice like this has adverse effects.
Anyway, it's too bad that the 1000m isn't a more seriously contended distance, because I think it suits Makhloufi's skill-set, as a true middle-distance runner, just about perfectly. Even still, I think it's fair to say that he was the best middle distance runner of 2016. There might have been better 1500m runners out there, or better 800m runners, but 2 Olympic silvers in those two events is an incredible feat.

Me too. Can you elaborate?
Anyone who doesn't understand the workout is bad at math or overthinking it too much. The workout was designed to all be done at the same pace yielding goal times of 1:44, 1:05, :52. He ran the middle rep a touch fast. Get it?

Alright, got it.
You also don't have anyone pushing you faster from behind, or anyone blocking wind from you in the front. I don't know anyone who runs within a second of their PR in a workout. That's some crazy shit.
Cool camera angle!

Let me add the following lane 1 memories
1) walking 3 dogs with various leash lengths then disciplining the poor animal for trying to go after a runner
2) asserting your right to let the dog off leash on a track then screaming at everyone trying to avoid the dog that the dog is friendly
3) walking with a soccer ball then shooting it across the lanes to bounce it off concrete stands - no look for runners
4) 250lbs, 5'4", scarf, 1 bottle of perfume
Makhloufi is an incredible athlete and great camera work.
