No, I don't mean the Incas. With the proliferation of for-profit gimmick events, I find myself missing some of the great regional (I live in the mid-Atlantic region) races of the past. Not only were they mass-participation events, but we showed up to RACE for little to no money - for the glory. No lead pack of Africans miles ahead of the hobby joggers (of which I have begrudgingly become one), but a lead pack bashing away with a steady stream of warriors right behind with no gaps in the field to be found. Here are the ones I miss...
New Jersey 10 Miler
Asbury Park 10K Classic
Midland Run 15K
Philadelphia Independence Marathon
Philadelphia Distance Run (new R&R version can't compete)
Penn Relays Marathon
any Browning Ross series race (miss ya Brownie!)
Never got to run great ones like the Cascade Run Off of the Maggie Valley Moonlight Run. What are some of the great extinct races you miss?
