When it's warm I find 3" split-shorts to be better. I get warm with tights. I live in Germany and I usually wear split-shorts from may to september. April, march, october and november it depends on the weather. From december to february it's usually tights to above the knee with some rare really cold days were it get's colder.

Shorts over tights

Kudzu, the best running shorts I have ever found as an aging runner (37) who no longer wants to wear splits are the Brooks team shorts at Running Warehouse:
http://www.runningwarehouse.com/Brooks_Mens_Curved_Side_Panel_Short/descpage-BMCPS.htmlI am not shilling for the site or the brand, but these perform well for fast running and still cover a good amount of leg. No pockets or other crap (sorry to the pocket guy above). Just a good running short that I feel comfortable wearing around town without embarrassing my family.
It says 5" inseam but I have found that they feel a bit longer than most of my 5" shorts.
Hope it helps.
Are you a female? Because those are the ladies team shorts. Those shorts were not made to hold a men's genitalia.
most racing shorts for HS teams are 2" inseam.
My HS boys team will make fun of runners that show up in basketball shorts for practice.
We are real runners here in Ohio

Real lady boys is what you are
As a slightly older runner I think 4" inseam is optimal. Unfortunately it's getting tougher to find them. I visited my local Nike outlet a few weeks back for some shorts and they didn't have anything shorter than 7" -- which feels like something I'd wear to the gym, not for running. Amazon to the rescue.
Dick's is a sh*thole. I went to my local one a few times and the employees were morons and couldn't even be bothered to grab me some shoes from the back. Find a local running store.
Above 6:45 pace - 7" inseam
5:45 - 6:45 pace - 5" - 7" inseam
4:45 - 5:45 pace - 3" - 5" inseam
Fashion is as uncertain as fame. Been running in 3" split side shorts since 1967. Response is still about 98% positive from others; not changing the style just because of others' attitude trends.
If you're running 4'45" for training runs I think you deserve to just run in the nude
Does nobody wear true short shorts ? I think 3\" is still long for most.
Any college program April to October its 1\"- 2\" inseam. I now feel weird wearing anything else to run in, but I don\'t stop at the store or venture around town after a run without a pair of longer shorts to pull over (usually).

Agreed. There is really no reason to wear short shorts, anything less than 6" inseam on easy runs, except that you just enjoy wearing short shorts.
In that case, I would bet the house that your motivation for running is that you get to wear your short shorts
Well, it depends.
Do you use internal or external protection on your period?

I can confirm this, The only thing that brings happiness to my mundane life is the opportunity to expose those in my community to the slightly muscular, very pale limbs that are my legs. Getting to wear 3" seam split shorts is what keeps me going, sadly.
Short shorts are the way to go.

Did you purposely skip over the 15 different "Men's Shorts" headlines and focus on the one website copy error? The women's Brooks equivalent have a much higher notch out of the side:

They are both women's shorts? Does it really matter? If you wear tights then I'm sure you are okay wearing women's shorts

Wait. I don't understand. The one's that say Men's Running Shorts in the Men's section of the website are women's shorts? I was going to buy some of the burgundy ones, so if they are really women's shorts I don't want to buy them.
I don't wear tights.
We're finally reaching the end of a long, hot, humid, summer. I see XC guys out running in 95 degree heat & 90 percent humidity while wearing some granddad's cut-off (below the knee) dress slacks. It's Absurdistan. It's like some kind of self-inflicted Islamic body-fear. I've got some 5-inch inseam shorts that are great in cool weather, which become dripping dishrags of sweat if I wear them in the Summer. Your socks and shoes fill up and squish and your feet wind up pasty and wrinkled. I can't imagine choosing to repeat the experience day-in and day-out. Oversize "shorts" are the male equivalent of 18-hour girdles and whale-bone corsets. They're flat out stupid and they express a fear of being observed. I'm gonna manufacture & market a line of Cool-Max burqas for timid endurance athletes.
